Alexandra Pereira

Alexandra Pereira completed her Masters in Clinical Psychology - Branch of Systemic and Dynamic Psychology in 2004 by FPCE - University of Coimbra, attended two MAs (in Gender, Women and Literature at the University of Hull-2007 and in Languages, Literature and Culture at FCSH - Universidade Nova Lisbon-2006) and finished her PhD in Sociology in 2019/03/20, by the University of Lisbon (ISEG), under the supervision of Professor João Peixoto, with a thesis entitled: "Transborder Himalaya: Processes of Transnationalism Among Nepalese Entrepreneurs and Workers in Lisbon" (66 interviews with Nepalese workers and entrepreneurs; fieldwork and data analysis - 2014/2018). Her PhD was obtained under the InterUniversity Consortium PhD Program in Sociology "OpenSoc" (gathering ISEG-University of Lisbon, ICS-University of Lisbon, ISCSP-University of Lisbon, FCSH - Nova University of Lisbon, the University of Évora and the University of Algarve). She participated with a paper/presentation at the IMISCOE 2020 Annual Conference and will participate with 6 papers/presentations on Nepalese migrants at IMISCOE 2021 Spring and Annual Conferences and the National Congress of Sociology 2021 as well. In 2020-21, she has attended Online Seminars by IMISCOE, the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migrattion and Integration, the Global Migration Centre Switzerland, CRIA and others. She was a research fellow for the project by CIES (ISCTE-IUL)-Audax: "Migration and Human Trafficking for Labor Exploitation. Nepalese in Greenhouses in Portugal" (Ref: PT/2017/FAMI/158), funded by the High Commission for Migrations (2017-2019 ). This project had as its final outputs 1 international conference , several meetings (gathering multiple Portuguese and foreign institutions, such as Ministries, Consulates and Embassies), 3 scientific articles written by her (analysing the data from 38 interviews), information materials for migrants (flyers, pocket cards, websites) in several languages, published in Portugal and Nepal, and various multilateral meetings. Since 2014, she wrote articles, collaborated in conferences and projects related to the Nepalese migrants in Portugal/Europe (eg. integration of Nepalese women and children; Nepalese organizations; media usage; health issues of the Nepalese in Portugal together with Hospitals and Health Centers of Lisbon, among others) and she was a guest discussant for the Theses by Nepalese students at the Masters program MFamily Erasmus Mundus - ISCTE-IUL/Stavanger Univ/GothenburgUniv/MakerereUniv. Alexandra Pereira holds a solid knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, as well as previous research experience, including ethnographic research, especially in the scope of research projects developed for CIES/ISCTE-IUL, ISEG-UL, ICS-UL, IEFP, FPCE-University of Coimbra, NEPPUS and IDT/Ministry of Health, using the tools NVivo, MAXQDA (post-grad training by CES-UCoimbra and ICS-ULisboa), SPSS, Mac, Atlas Ti, SQDA, WebQDA, Tableau Server. She operates in the area of Social Sciences with an emphasis on Sociology of Migrations and Transnationalism. In her Ciência Vitae curriculum, the most frequent terms in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural production are: Migrations; Transnationalism; Nepalese Women; Ethnic Economies; Nepalese Migrants.She also finished a BA in Painting and Intermedia, completed writing courses and collaborated with feminist author Bracha Ettinger (2009-12). She implemented projects for NGOs dealing with international migrants and ethnic minorities, especially in Finland (2007-2008, 2011-2012) for EUMAN, Ovi Magazine/AVA Foundations, StarDays; in the United Kingdom (2009 and 2011-2013) together with the Dutch Cultural Center & Dutch Embassy in London/Vegas Gallery, Braziliarty London, Center for Nepal Studies, Nepal Academic Council and Yeti Nepalese Association in the UK, Nepali Wave UK and Free Health Nepal London Association; and in Portugal (2010-20).
