I finished this year (2024) a Postdoctoral Program in Integral Human Development – Migration at CECC & CADOS, Portuguese Catholic University with a research project on “Inequalities and forms of discrimination faced by two generations of Nepali women in Portugal”, under the supervision of Professor Teresa Bartolomei and funded by the dutch Porticus Foundation. I hold a PhD in Sociology by ISEG – Lisbon University (2019) under the Consortium Program OpenSoc (Lisbon University-ICS, Lisbon University-ISEG, FCSH-Lisbon Nova University, Évora University, Algarve University), with a thesis titled “Transborder Himalaya: processes of transnationalism among Nepali entrepreneurs and workers in Lisbon” (approved with distinction), under supervision of Professor João Peixoto. My relevant research experience includes the 4-year doctoral research project (2014-2018) and the 2-year postdoctoral project (2022-2024) mentioned before, or the project “Immigration and Trafficking for Labour Exploitation: Nepalese in Agriculture in Portugal” for ACM/Audax/CIES-ISCTE/IUL – Project Reference: PT/2017/FAMI/158 (2017-2019), under supervision of Professor Cláudia Pereira and Professor Rui Pena Pires. I also carried out research to produce papers for IMISCOE Spring and Annual conferences and workshops, at least twice a year since 2016, and to write the book chapters “Roles played by institutional media and independent journalism amongst the Nepali diaspora living in Spain & Portugal" (Iº Congreso Internacional de Periodismo, UFV–Madrid, chapther 10, pp. 167-185 of the book “Periodismo y Desinformación", coord. Humberto Martinéz-Fresneda Osorio, Colección Jano Comunicación y Humanidades, October 2023) and “South Asian Migrants in Portugal – The Case Study of Nepali Migrants in the Agriculture Sector" (in Reena Kukreja, org. “South Asians in Southern Europe: Labour, Identity, and Desire”, Palgrave Macmillan, upcoming). I have been an active member of IMISCOE/Migration Research Hub since 2016 and I organised multiple workshops in schools, hospitals and health centres in Portugal (collaborating with local municipalities, employers and centres for immigrant support, doctors, nurses, anthropologists, sociologists and social workers) to clarify issues related with the integration of South Asian migrants, Nepalis in particular, and come up with collective solutions for intercultural dialogue. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I had a 16 month period of leave from research, both due to personal/family disease and multiple lockdowns, and later due to work in the health industry (as I was employed as clinical psychologist for the Portuguese Covid-19 hotline and also volunteered for non-research social activities during the pandemic). This was possible because I also hold an MA in Clinical Psychology by FPCE – Coimbra University (2004) and a professional internship in Psychology (Portuguese Ministry for Employment and Social Security, 2007). Furthermore, I attended a BA in Painting and Intermedia (2008-2011) at IPT and Ar.co Lisbon, and I was an emigrant in Finland and the United Kingdom before 2014. I have published on South Asian and Nepali migrants in Portugal since 2016 (e.g. Journal of Rural Studies, multiple Imiscoe conferences, journals and congresses of the Portuguese Sociology and Anthropology Associations). I collaborated with migrant associations in Finland, the UK and Portugal since 2010, worked as a research assistant for ISCTE-IUL, discussed or was part of the juri for a number of MA theses, and I was a consultant for hospitals receiving South Asian patients and for migrant associations. My current research interests include: migration, inequalities, migration governance, decentered migration studies, South Asian and Nepali migrants, gender and migration, transnationalism, labour exploitation and climate migrants. I am a Member of APS (Portuguese Sociology Association) and OPP (Portuguese Psychologists Council).
