I have a bachelor's and master's degree in Chemistry from the Universidade de Lisboa focused on studying protein complexes involved in ubiquitination pathways. I have concluded my PhD in November of 2019 in Biomedicine, from the University of Barcelona and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), at the laboratory of Maria J. Macias, a highly cited scientist in the NMR and structural biology fields. During my PhD, my research output was mainly focused on deciphering the conformational landscape of Smad multidomain proteins, the principal effectors of the TGFß pathway. I have gained experience in protein cloning, production, and acquisition and interpretation of biochemical and biophysical data, namely NMR, SAXS, and ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMMS). I have also developed computational tools to integrate the above-mentioned data to decipher the conformational landscape of flexible and large multidomain proteins (between 450 to 1000-plus residues) and the impact of cancer mutations. This was the first study on full-length Smad transcription factors . This work was selected for an invited talk at the EUROMAR conference in 2020 and the iNEXT-Discovery meeting in 2021. I was awarded a Severo Ochoa Excellence Programme grant by the Spanish state and a PhD classification of excellent cum laude. Being a highly motivated scientist and paving the way for my research independence, I also supervised two master and bachelor students in projects stemming directly from results of my PhD. One such project aimed to study the impact of cancer mutants in the structure of Smad proteins. I was involved in project writing and supervision and was awarded funding by the BBVA Foundation. My PhD was highly interdisciplinary with international collaborations, including Joan Massagué laboratory, a well-renowned scientist in cancer and metastasis fields. After PhD completion, I continued for a postdoc (14 months) in the same laboratory in collaboration with a drug-screening company (Atomwise), where I co-supervised another Master student. After this short post-doc, I applied to three post-doctoral fellowships and was awarded two during this time. I kindly declined the Margarita Salas call from the Spanish state and the University of Barcelona (score 90/100) to accept an international call associated with an FCT-funded project, which provided an opportunity to start at the Dynamic Structural Biology laboratory at ITQB NOVA in Portugal starting in February 2022, where I have outputed 3 papers and supervised two students (until March 2024). Overall my interdisciplinary and international research profile has yielded 9 peer-reviewed papers, 3 selected conference talks, 6 conference posters, and the supervision of 5 students with direct involvement in 6 funded projects. I have also secured funding to pursue my research interests and was granted international calls for post-doctoral fellowships.
