Experienced clinical microbiologist/molecular biologist scientist with special interests in the area of infectious diseases/antimicrobial development and resistance. My works in Infectious Diseases have extended for more than 24 years covering both aspects clinical, basic the translational aspects of related diseases. I have been conducting clinical and basic research on antimicrobials and multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial pathogens to which treatment options are limited. Specifically, in the last nineteen years, my research goals have been to characterize evolutionary and molecular mechanisms underlying antibiotic resistance during the dynamic process of host/pathogen infections. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) organisms are important human pathogens responsible for infections to which antimicrobial options are limited. I have been fortunate enough to contribute in many areas of the field, with the personal conviction that the strategy in combating antimicrobial resistance needs to be directed from the view of multiple and coordinate efforts, basic and clinical research, collaborative studies with the pharmaceutical industry to speed up the discovery of new antibiotics, policies and measures to control the spread of resistance (hospital and community settings) and by increasing scientific collaborations with diverse parts including USA, South America and Europe. My research interests during the last years have been extended to the impact of antibiotics in the gut microbiota leading to dybiosis leading to selection of antimicrobial resistant pathogens. My activities include as a group leader, pre-clinical and correlative clinical studies, writing protocols, presenting at scientific meetings and conferences developing collaborative relationships. I have a great deal of expertise in microbiology testing, molecular biology, diagnostics, genomic, transcriptomic analysis and in-vivo models. Moreover, working in close collaboration as advisor consultant of pharmaceutical companies/drug discovery, NIH-NIAID, and WHO division antimicrobial resistance. I have invested timeless efforts in contributing and advising the field of Antimicrobial resistance by participating in revision of scientific advances and discoveries at the NIH and European Agencies, having had the opportunity of contributing my input to important decisions of funding and studies in the area of Antimicrobial Resistance. In addition, I have been contributing to the identification of antibacterial approaches and their execution, trained in areas of GCP, clinical trials, and CRO relationships. More important, over the years I have strongly committed to mentoring young investigators and I have served and I`m serving as a primary mentor for several individuals. This extended experience has also helped me to grow as a scientist, mentor, and team leader, and making me better suited for the tasks as the evolution in the field requires.
