Hugo Alexandre Louro Filipe completed the PhD in Chemistry - specialization in Biological Chemistry in 2014 by the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra. H. Filipe completed also the MSc in Chemistry - specialization in Advanced Chemistry in 2009 and the Graduation in Chemistry in 2006 by the same University. The PhD of H. Filipe complemented his experimental background with expertise in simulation of biological systems using molecular and kinetic modelling techniques. In the last years, H. Filipe developed the detailed characterization of biomolecular systems, at atomistic and coarse-grained level, focusing on the interaction of drug-like molecules with biological barriers. He makes use of molecular dynamics simulations to obtain the equilibrium and kinetic characterization of the interaction of drug-like molecules with lipid bilayers and proteins, such as efflux transporters, acting on the permeation of molecules through physiological barriers. In particular, he makes important methodological developments in the correct determination of free energy profiles for the interaction of molecules with lipid bilayers. He also developed mechanistic kinetic models where, by inclusion of the relevant parameters, it is possible to predict experimental observables. Currently, H. Filipe is a Coordinating Researcher in Instituto Politécnico da Guarda, developing his research work in the area of Biotechnology. H. Filipe taught two disciplines of the Medicinal Biotechnology degree at IPG. Also, he is Vogal of the Fiscal Council of the Portuguese Biophysics Society. H. Filipe has several active national and international collaborations, with theoretical and experimental groups. The close collaboration with experimental groups is very important to correctly define the modelling systems, and to translate theoretical results into applicability. In some numbers: H. Filipe published 28 articles in journals and 1 section of books. Organized 19 events. Participated in 25 events. Co-supervised 1 work of discipline for a PhD thesis. Supervised 1 MSc dissertation and co-supervised 5. Co-supervised 8 final works of LSc/BSc. Has received 11 awards and/or honours. H. Filipe participates and/or participated as Principal investigator in 4 projects, including a SUDOE project, and had different roles in 18 other projects. H. Filipe was opponent in the Jury of 3 academic degrees. In their professional activities he interacted with dozens of collaborators in co-authorship of scientific papers. These numbers, namely those referring to project leadership, project participation and supervision activities represent the continuous development of a scientific independent career by H. Filipe.
