Ana Nobre

Ana Nobre is the Lab Manager at the Advanced Cell Technology Lab (ACT Lab), led by PI Hugo Fernandes at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal). As the most senior member after the PI, she assists in lab and project management, lab meetings, student mentoring, and dissemination activities. Ana holds a PhD in Biochemistry (Microbiology specialization) from the Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra (2012), as well as a Master’s in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a Bachelor’s in Biology (2007 and 2002, respectively). After her Bachelor's, Ana worked on various scientific projects, including medical microbiology research on yeast populations from immunocompromised patients and studies on stress molecules (compatible solutes) used by microorganisms. During her PhD, she focused on molecular mechanisms of microbial and plant adaptation to extreme temperatures and drought, particularly the characterization of key enzymes involved in the synthesis and hydrolysis of compatible solutes. Following a career break due to maternity leave (Jul 2012–Sept 2013), Ana pursued postdoctoral research at the Genomic Unit (UC-Biotech, Cantanhede), investigating microbial diversity in grapevines. This project partnered with the Magnomics Start-up, aiming to develop a microfluidics platform for molecular nucleic acid analysis. Between 2015 and 2017, Ana worked in the industry at Crioestaminal SA/GeneLab (Biocant Park, Cantanhede), contributing to cryopreservation laboratory activities and promoting a prenatal diagnostic test for early fetal chromosomal disorder detection. In 2018, she joined the Laboratory of Microbiology (Biocant Park) to perform microbiological quality control, particularly implementing ISO 11731:2017 for Legionella spp. isolation in water samples. In 2019, Ana returned to academia as a contracted researcher at iBiMED, studying tissue-specific aggregation-prone proteins in mammals and the molecular mechanisms behind widespread proteome aggregation during aging. Her research aims to identify novel proteostasis-related genes and age-related disease gene signatures through proteomics and genomics analysis. Ana has six peer-reviewed publications (three as first author), one book chapter ("Marine Enzymes for Biocatalysis"), and multiple international conference abstracts. In 2019, she became a FELASA-accredited Category A, B, and D Specialist and contributed as a qPCR data analyst in iBiMED’s SARS-COV2 testing task force. She has been involved in student supervision, lab rotations, and teaching Functional and Organic Systems I, III, and IV in the Biomedicine degree (Department of Health Sciences, UA). Additionally, she actively participates in science outreach initiatives such as Aveiro TechDays, Xperimenta UA, UA-Summer Academy, and European Researchers' Night. Ana has engaged in entrepreneurship and technology transfer activities, participating in the 2nd Edition Seed Tech Transfer program (UC Business, 2023), which fosters R&D commercialization. In 2024, she became a GreenKeeper at GreenLabs CiBB, promoting sustainable lab practices to minimize the environmental impact of scientific research.
