Patrícia Frederico Susano is a Ph.D. student in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Coimbra. This PhD thesis project aims to study the anti-inflammatory and protective capacity of components from two brown seaweeds, namely Carpomitra costata and Sargassum muticum, and a red seaweed Sphaerococcus coronopifolius, on in vitro and ex vivo skin models of psoriasis, specifically to evaluate the ability of those seaweed-derived components to inhibit the activation of MAPKs and NF-kB pro-inflammatory signalling pathways, as well as to modulate the expression of cytokines and chemokines involved in the pathophysiology of psoriasis. She has a MSc in Biotechnology of Marine Resources (2021) and a BSc in Marine Biology and Biotechnology (2017) by School of Tourism and Maritime Technology (ESTM) - Polytechnic of Leiria. Her research work in the field of Marine Biotechnology is focused on the search of marine compounds isolated from marine organisms, namely seaweeds, with therapeutic interest for dermatological and pharmacology purposes (e.g., anti-inflammatory, anti-psoriasis, antioxidant, photoprotective and antimicrobial activity). Her MSc thesis focused on the study of the biological potential of the brown seaweed, C. costata for dermatological applications, evaluating the antioxidant, anti-enzymatic, and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, she evaluated the photoprotective and anti-inflammatory activity of the C. costata fractions on in vitro cellular models, using fibroblasts and macrophages cells, respectively. At the same time, she also evaluated the dermatological potential of two more brown seaweeds, namely S. muticum and Saccorhiza polyschides. In 2020, she integrated the Covid19 Diagnostic Center at the MARE-IPLeiria, as researcher volunteer, and integrated the project DisCovEr+ granted to CoviD19 Diagnostic Center. She participated in 8 projects on competitive national and international calls and has 12 full papers in scientific journals with peer review (3 as author and 9 as co-author); with Q1 score and 1 book chapter. She also participated in 10 communications in international conferences, including poster and oral communications. She is a certified diver and has completed a Graduate Program in Scientific Diving, performing the following SSI specialty programs: Deep Diving, Enriched Air Nitrox Level 2 (40%), Navigation, Night Diving and Limited Visibility, React Right, Stress & Rescue, and Science of Diving.
