André Fonseca is a violinist and conductor, who graduated from the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon and holds a PhD in Music from the University of Aveiro. As a fellow of the Gulbenkian Foundation, he studied in Berlin, Germany, with Abraham Jaffée. where he remained for three years. He participated in master classes with Gerardo Ribeiro, Anatoly Bajenov, Pierre Amoyal, and Ifrah Neaman. He was a private pupil of Max Rabinowitsj. He won several prizes in Portugal and has played concerts throughout Europe. In duo with piano has given concerts in several music festivals having collaborated with pianists such as Maria Emilia Leite Velho, Nancy Lee Harper, João Miguel Crisóstomo, Eduardo Resende, Grigory Gritsiouk, João Bettencourt, Nuno Caçote, Bernardo Santos, among others. He plays regularly as a soloist with orchestra, having played with the Orchestra of the RDP, Orchestra Collegium Musicum, Filarmonia das Beiras, Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, among others. In this context, he has played violin concerts of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Max Bruch, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms, and others. He founded the Luís de Freitas Branco String Trio and the Aveiro String Quartet, having given concerts in different parts of the country, and dedicating particular attention to Portuguese music. He is the concertmaster of Filarmonia das Beiras Orchestra since 1998 having played more than 1400 concerts in these functions in Portugal, Spain and France. He is frequently invited to join competition juries and give master classes. Since 2012 he has been a professor of violin and chamber Music at Aveiro University, Portugal, where since 2024 is the Chairholder of Violin, and the Vice Director of Master’s Degree in Music Education. As a conductor, he has worked mainly with youth orchestras. His preferred research area has been group music practice, as a collaborative and inclusive activity, in its different aspects, and its implications on the motivation and learning of students.
