Magdalena Ksiezarek is a young career scientist, currently doing her Doctorate degree in Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, Portugal. She completed Master Degree in Pharmacy in Wroclaw Medical University in Poland, working on carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii collection. Since 2016 she is a member of Bact-Drugs Lab (UCIBIO-REQUIMTE, Faculdade de Farmácia-Universidade do Porto) in a new research team focusing on female urinary microbiota in health and disease. Since 2017 she is a PhD student conducting an in-depth comprehensive study on urinary microbiome connections to human health and disease – using and improving culture-dependent and –independent methodologies. Currently her main area of activity focuses on human microbiota: the interactions between microorganisms within a niche, potential consequences of dysbiosis in bacterial communities and disease inference. Additionally, high-throughput methodologies for bacterial characterization combined with 16S rRNA gene sequencing and other biomarkers e.g., housekeeping genes and phylogenetic analysis that allow investigate bacterial taxonomy and describe novel species. Moreover, her research required skills necessary for genomic characterization coupled with bioinformatic tools to identify and characterize relevant human microbiota members. Also, surveillance and molecular epidemiology of highly resistant bacterial species from different clinical (hospital, community, long-term care facilities) and non-clinical (healthy volunteers, animals, environment) settings with special interest in the factors involved in the persistence, selection and evolution of antimicrobial resistance genes and; evaluation of the potential of spectroscopic- (FTIR, MALDI-TOF) and genomic- [whole genome sequencing (WGS)] based methodologies.
