Ivan Salazar (IS) graduated in Biology at the Univ. of Coimbra (UC) in 2010, and his first research experience was at the Biophysics Department of the Fac. Medicine (UC) studying the accumulation of radiolabeled Fludeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) by tumor cells. In 2012 he completed the MSc in Biomedical Research from the Fac Medicine at the same university, and was awarded a highly competitive scholarship from the BEB PhD Program (UC). He did the PhD work under supervision of Dr. C. Duarte, exploring the interplay between Calpains and the UPS that contribute to neuronal demise in brain ischemia, and this work will soon be submitted for publication. Part of the work was performed in collaboration with Dr. B. Dahlmann (Charité–Universitätsmedizin Berlin), which contributed to his strong expertise in proteasome biochemistry, and allowed to identify novel substrates of calpain-dependent cleavage. More recently, he identified novel CSF biomarkers that allow distinguishing patients with MS from patients with other inflammatory and non-inflammatory disorders of the CNS. The work was performed in collaboration with the Neurology Clinic at the UC Hospital, Dr M.J. Saraiva (I3S, Univ Porto, Portugal) among others. Recently, IS also had the initiative of an International collaborative project using small molecules acting as proteasome boosters to prevent protein aggregation in cellular models of Machado-Joseph disease (manuscript under preparation in collaboration with Dr Trader, Purdue University, USA). This solid collaborative network helped him to address in the past the question of how and why is the UPS dysfunctional in brain ischemia, and to study how proteasome activators can prevent cell demise in brain ischemia. His findings can also be exploited in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. He often teaches classes of the Cell Regulation course (UC), Neuroscience (Univ. Aveiro), and regularly supervises laboratory rotations as well as long-term internship students (BSc in Biochemistry and Biology). IS has officially supervised two Msc students, collaborated in the preparation of five grant proposals, and submitted two as PI. He often presents his work at International Meetings: EMBO Workshop on Proteostasis, ISN-ESN Biennial Meeting, and FENS Forum of Neuroscience, among others. IS is presently seeking opportunities to start his independent scientific career. He has submitted three proposals as PI. Bibliometric data: total of 8 publications, half of them in Q1, a h-index of 6, 377 citations (Scopus Feb. 2020), and an accumulated impact factor of 42.7.
