Raquel Madureira is a Principal Researcher at CBQF, Catholic University, where they lead the Biotech Innovation and Tech Transfer (BITT) Research Group. In addition to this role, she also serves as the R&D Manager at Biorbis. As a member of the Scientific Council at ESB, UCP, and the Internal Engagement Task Force, actively contributes to high-level academic and industry initiatives. Raquel Madureira has led 20 international and national projects and has contributed to the management and scientific coordination of the Alchemy PROJECT R&D+I in collaboration with Amyris (USA). This initiative focuses on establishing a biotechnology and circular economy center in Portugal, integrating bioengineering, microbiology, and bioanalytical techniques to develop high-value molecules for various industries. Currently, her and their group are working with Biorbis on ongoing collaborative projects. She has supervised 8 PhD students (5 completed, 3 ongoing) and over 20 Master’s students, in addition to mentoring Erasmus/Science without Borders students and guiding final-year undergraduate projects. With an extensive publication record, Dr. Madureira is the author of more than 100 indexed manuscripts, holding an h-index of 36 (as of April 2025). She has also contributed to 75 posters and abstracts at national and international conferences, delivered 23 invited oral presentations, authored 13 book chapters, and holds 9 patents (4 provisional). Since 2018, has served as a European Projects Expert Evaluator for various prestigious organizations, including Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD), INNOWWIDE, H2020 EC, Eureka Eurostars, EIT Food, EIT Health, EIC Pathfinder, and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. The Biotech Innovation and Tech Transfer (BITT) Research Group, under Dr. Madureira leadership, is committed to advancing white biotechnology processes and developing value-added biomolecules from renewable resources such as sugarcane, while minimizing environmental impact. The group’s market-driven research provides applied solutions across sectors such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food and animal feed, and advanced materials. The BITT group functions as a high-tech hub, supporting the development and commercialization of innovative products for industry partners. Comprising approximately 40 skilled researchers, the team collaborates with companies from the initial product development stages, offering expertise in applied science and market integration. The group’s state-of-the-art facilities include advanced analytical platforms, which are in the process of being certified to meet the highest industry standards. In their role as R&D Manager at Biorbis, Dr. Madureira leads cutting-edge research and development initiatives for the company, which specializes in the commercialization of novel biomolecules. Biorbis is recognized for its innovative approach to biotechnology, particularly in sustainable solutions and the development of biomolecular products for sectors such as food, animal feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and materials. Her research interests are focused on developing in vitro models to simulate biological phenomena and evaluate compounds and formulations. These models are designed to enhance the understanding of microbiome modulation and its applications in health and wellness. Recently, Dr. Madureira research has expanded to investigate the mechanisms of aging, including the identification of factors responsible for age-related signs and diseases, and the influence of the microbiome on these processes.
