Senior researcher at CBQF from Catholic University and Invited Assistant Professor at the same institution. Leader of the Biotech Innovation Tech Transfer (BITT) which focuses on white biotechnology fermentation processes, and on the resulting by-products and value-added biomolecules produced, using renewable sources of carbon and nutrients. The use of white biotechnology is essential for the future competitiveness of European industry, providing a sound technological base for a sustainable society and bioeconomy and for the development of bioindustries of the future. This group works on the development and improvement of fermentation processes for industry, on finding attractive solutions for their by-products and disruptive applications for the produced biomolecules. Applied research and market driven innovative solutions for cosmetic and skin care, pharmaceutical, food and animal feed and materials applications with strong engagement of companies at an early phase of product development. Activities are settled in a profound link and interaction with European and International industries. Member of the Scientific Council (ESB, UCP) and Internal Engagement Task Force. Since 2018, European Projects Expert Evaluator of Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD), INNOWWIDE, H2020 EC, Eureka Eurostars, EitFood and EitHealth, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. Editorial Board Member of Foods Journal (2023), Current Probiotics (2020), EC Nutrition, Nanomedicine and Nanotechnology, Food Research International. Principal investigator of scientific projects and member of 20 international and national projects. Member of the management team and scientific coordination of Alchemy PROJECT R&D+I in collaboration with the USA Biotechnology Company Amyris which consisted of the Creation of a centre of excellence in Portugal focused on the areas of Biotechnology and Circular Economy, adding bioengineering, microbiology, and bioanalytical skills and development of new molecules of high commercial interest, for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic industries. Until now supervised about 7 PhD (2 finished and 5 ongoing) and more than 15 Master programmes (all finished), Erasmus/Science without borders students and BsC final projects. Author or more than 90 indexed manuscripts with a h-index of 31 (Janeiro 2024), 65 posters and abstracts in national and international conferences, 23 invited oral communications and 7 patents (2 provisional). Her expertise has garnered recognition on a global scale, with invitations to join the Global Burden Disease network and to provide consulting services to Preasans company. Research expertise in compounds chemical and bioactivities characterization and development of new and innovative ingredients for applications in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and materials industries. Additionally, research is strongly industry driven focused on the valorisation of by-products/residues following the biorefinery concept, using green and low-cost processes for extraction of value-added compounds. Knowledge on the development of alternative fermentable sugars for fermentation processes in the concept of biorefinery. Business models construction for the commercialization of ingredients for food and cosmetic markets. Special research interest in in vitro models’ development for biological phenomena simulation and microbiome modulation, for compounds and formulations testing, and recently understanding of aging mechanisms.
