João Graça has a wide range of research interests and is familiar with diverse research methods (qualitative, quantitative, mixed), which he seeks to apply to help tackle social and environmental challenges. His overall research agenda is to identify pathways toward more sustainable contexts and lifestyles, taking a broad view of sustainability that includes improving social relations as well as our relation with the natural environment. His main areas of research include how to promote transitions toward healthier and more sustainable food consumption (e.g., Planetary Health Diet), how to design and evaluate intervention programs (e.g., needs assessment, community interventions), and how to improve the social environment in development contexts for children and adolescents (e.g., schools, families, residential care). He has authored several scientific publications and has been involved in several research projects - both as team member and as principal investigator - funded by relevant partners and agencies (e.g., European Commission; European Regional Development Fund; Portuguese Ministry of Education; Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology).
