I am an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of behavioral and communication sciences with a focus on Planetary Health and sustainability transitions. My research program is to identify pathways to sustainability and develop resources to help realize these pathways. This takes a broad and inclusive view of sustainability that includes improving social relations as well as our relationship with the natural environment, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. My interests and experience in this broad and interdisciplinary program include plant-forward transitions (meat reduction, plant-based diets), environmental communication (frames and messages to promote pro-environmental food policies and consumption), program design and evaluation (needs assessment, community interventions), and protecting vulnerable or disempowered populations (child protection, human-animal relations). I have authored several scientific publications relevant for (social/environmental) sustainability transitions, and have participated as principal investigator and/or team member in national and international research projects tackling societal challenges, funded by key partners and agencies (e.g., European Commission; European Regional Development Fund; Portuguese Ministry of Education; Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology; ZonMw; Swiss National Science Foundation). The impact of my work has been acknowledged on several occasions, including an independent peer-reviewed bibliometric analysis that included my work among the most influential research in the field of meat reduction (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.fufo.2022.100120). Outputs from my research program have been shaping research developments in the field across disciplines including environmental sciences, health and nutrition sciences, communication sciences, psychology, political science, and food sciences. My research has also been included in influential policy-oriented documents such as the United Nations IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, the UK Behavioural Insights Team’s Menu for Change, a “What Works” dossier of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM, Netherlands), and a joint report on cell-based foods by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). My research has also been featured in news and media platforms, including TheConversation.com, NutritionFacts.org, and Wikipedia.org. I am actively engaged in international research groups and editorial boards, and currently serve as Executive Editor of Appetite, a multidisciplinary and internationally established journal in the field of healthy and sustainable food consumption.
