Alexandre Bernardino holds a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (UL) (2004). He is currently an Associated Professor with tenure at the scientific area of Systems, Decision and Control (ACSDC) of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (DEEC). He is a researcher of the Institute for Systems and Robotics of IST (ISR/IST) and integrated member of the Laboratory of Robotics and Systems Engineering (LARSyS). Alexandre Bernardino started his pedagogical activity in 1995 and since then has taught 20 different disciplinary curricular units of the BSc and MSc degrees at IST/UL, on the broad areas of Robotics, Control, Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence. He has supervised and co-supervised 9 postdoctoral fellows, 21 PhD students and more than 150 MSc students. He has hosted 23 visiting students in their internships at ISR. The research interests of Alexandre Bernardino span the areas of Bioinspired and Learning Robots, Vision for Decision and Control, Object Grasping and Manipulation, and Human-Robot Interaction. He has published numerous peer-review articles in top international publications: 98 in journals, 188 in conferences, and 10 in book chapters. He participated in more that 40 national and international research projects, being the global coordinator in 8 of them. He has supervised 76 research fellowships integrated in research projects. He has 400 co-authors in scientific publications. Beyond the significant pedagogical and scientific achievements, Alexandre Bernardino has contributed to numerous managerial, professional, knowledge transfer and outreach initiatives. He is a current member of the executive board at ISR-Lisboa, adjunct coordinator of the scientific area of Systems, Decision and Control of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at IST, coordinator of the LARSyS Thematic Line INTERACTION – Cognitive Robots and Human Experience, joint coordinator of the Gender Balance group of IST, and adjunct coordinator of the Computer and Robot Vision Lab (VisLab) of IST. He was chair of the IEEE Portuguese RAS Chapter from 2014 to 2019. He was the founder of a spin-off company, and author of the disclosure of 3 inventions. He has co-supervised several students in theses with industry and has stablished several contracts and protocols with industrial partners.
