Márcia graduated in Biochemistry at Universidade de Lisboa in 2004 and completed her PhD in Science and Animal Technology at Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 2010. Since then, she had published 17 papers (first author of 8, h-index 10) with over 474 citations (Scopus author). Of these papers, two were published in PNAS, one in SCIENTIFIC REPORTS one in BIOORGANIC CHEMISTRY and various in JBC, JMB, BIOCHEMISTRY and FEMS, high impact factor journals in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During PhD developed scientific expertise in molecular and structural biology, and made several relevant contributions in the field of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZYmes). Márcia has several years of experience in gene cloning and expression, mutagenesis, recombinant protein expression and purification, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC), protein crystallization and X-ray crystallography. She also spent 4 months in the laboratory headed by prof. Harry Gilbert (ICMB, Newcastle University, UK), well known in the field of CAZYmes where she had the opportunity of deepening her knowledge on these proteins studying protein-carbohydrate interactions using ITC. After PhD, Márcia joined the protein crystallography group of Prof. Maria João Romão at UCIBIO, FCT-NOVA. The use of protein crystallography to solve different biological problems has been her main interest since she joined this group and, where she also had the opportunity to developed expertise in SAXS. In the past 10 years, has been involved in different topics since structural-activity studies on Nitric Oxide Synthase focused on drug design with the collaboration of Dr. João G. Correia (IST) to the structural characterization of a new periplasmic aldehyde oxidase (PaoABC) where collaborated with Dr. Silke Leimkueler (University of Potsdam, Germany). From this last collaboration one manuscript with the preliminary structural characterization of PaoABC was published in INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES and another focused on the structural and functional characterization in ACS CHEMICAL BIOLOGY. Also involved in the molybdenum topic, are the ABC-transporters witch together with molybdoenzymes have been one of her main research topics. Her Ph.D. topic is still present in her actual research, maintaining an actively collaboration with Carlos Fontes group (CIISA, UTL) together with Ana Luisa Carvalho (UCIBIO-NOVA). This collaboration already provided numerous advances in the field of cellulosomics namely by revealing the mechanism of cellulosome assembly and cell surface attachment and in deciphering the role of novel CBMs in efficient polysaccharide hydrolysis by cellulolytic bacteria. From this collaboration, resulted two manuscripts, one with the ligand specificity of type A Carbohydrate-binding Modules from family 64 in the JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY and recently another one in INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL MACROMOLECULES about novel insights in the function of a family 81 glycoside hydrolase from Clostridium thermocellum. From 2011 to present she had some teaching experience in classes of Masters in Biochemistry and Biotechnology in FCT-NOVA and was supervisor of 3 MSc thesis students. She was also involved in the INSTRUCT course, ISBio2014 and ISBio2015 where actively participated in the ITC module. During her post-doctoral period, went several times to different synchrotrons facilities to measure protein crystal samples, namely ESRF in Grenoble (France); DIAMOND in Didcot, UK; SLS in Village, Switzerland. Finally, She is a mother of two children, born in 2009 and 2014.
