Teresa Casal (B.A. UPorto; M.A. U Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro; PhD ULisboa) is Associate Professor in English at the School of Arts and Humanities (FLUL), University of Lisbon, and a researcher at the University of Lisbon Centre for Lisbon Studies (ULICES), where she currently coordinates the Project in Medical Humanities. A member of the ULICES-based Narrative & Medicine project since its inception (2009), she was a member of the FCT-funded projects Narrative & Medicine: (con)texts and practices across disciplines (PTDC/CPC-ELT/3719/2012; 2012-15) and SHARE: Health and Humanities Acting Together (PTDC/LLT-OUT/29231/2017; 2018-22), led by Isabel Fernandes. As coordinator of ULICES research group on Other Literatures and Cultures in English (2012-22) she launched the Project RHOME: Representations of Home in Literatures and Cultures in English, which explores issues of (un)belonging in literatures and cultures marked by dislocation. Her main areas of research are narrative fiction and non-fiction, Irish Studies, and Medical/Health Humanities. Her doctoral thesis (2007) focused on the role of creativity in response to existential and human-inflicted violence, as represented in the work of Irish novelist Jennifer Johnston. Her subsequent research on narrative fiction and life writing has continued to pursue these ethical and aesthetic concerns at the interface between literary studies and medical humanities. This interface concerns both what literary studies can bring to health education, and how this transit prompts the need to rethink the role of readers and the experience of reading in the teaching of literature and in the practice of literary criticism. She has published articles and book chapters in her areas of expertise and co-edited Global Perspectives in Probing Narratives in Healthcare (2023), the literary anthology Contar (com) a Medicina (2015; 2016; 2018), Beyond Diagnosis: Relating Person to Patient, Patient to Person (2014), and Revisitar o Mito / Myths Revisited (2015). She has been involved in the bidirectional transfer of knowledge between literary studies and medical education at the University of Lisbon and has given workshops and facilitated reading and writing groups for healthcare providers. She is also a literary translator.
