M. Sofia Fernandes obtained her PhD at Imperial College London (London, UK) in Human Reproductive Biology in 2008 and her MSc at Imperial College London in 2003 in Human Reproductive and Developmental Biology (awarded with Distinction). Her work focused on the role and signalling pathways of novel progesterone receptors with impact in female reproduction and pregnancy loss. This 6-year period was fundamental for her internationalization and development of interdisciplinary competences to pursue her research. Following her PhD and over the last years, M. Sofia Fernandes became a PostDoc/Junior Researcher at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação da Universidade do Porto (i3S)/ Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular da Universidade do Porto (Ipatimup) at the Epithelial Interactions in Cancer Group (EPIC) led by Raquel Seruca. During this period, M Sofia Fernandes also joined Instituto Superior Técnico (IST)-Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR). In 2023, M. Sofia Fernandes joined, as a Junior Reseracher, the Intercellular Communication and Cancer Group at i3S, led by Professor José Carlos Machado. M. Sofia Fernandes has been interested in the areas of Oncobiology, Applied Cancer Research, Computational Bioimaging and Technological and Translational Research. M. Sofia Fernandes has an h-index of 15 (Scopus), 26 internationally peer reviewed publications: 20 articles in journals, 1 conference paper and 5 book chapters, with 1179 citations by 1044 documents. Specifically, her research has focused on exploring many aspects of epithelial cancers, in particular in unravelling novel cancer biomarkers and developing novel technological strategies for early cancer detection and monitor cancer progression, ultimately assisting patient stratification and therapeutic approaches. M. Sofia Fernandes has also been focusing on Liquid Biopsies and Circulating Tumour Cells (CTCs) and on the development of novel approaches to better isolate and evaluate these cells, with impact in cancer detection and therapeutic strategies. M. Sofia Fernandes is a certified user of the CellSearch (Menarini Silicon Biosystems), the only FDA approved system for the isolation and enumeration of CTCs in metastatic breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. She is also certified for the DEPArray Plus (Menarini Silicon Biosystems), a system to recover individual cells for further analysis, namely CTCs. M. Sofia Fernandes also focused on Cell-ECM interactions and in establishing models for the analysis of phenotypic and molecular features of cancer cells. In addition, M. Sofia Fernandes is involved in developing bioimaging strategies based on machine/deep learning algorithms for several purposes namely lung cancer detection, cell cycle staging at single cell level, and identification of invasive cancer cells based on the cytoskeletal architecture, with impact in cancer research and clinical applications. Her period as a researcher at IST-ISR was fundamental to strengthen her interdisciplinary competences for translational medicine, in which she was involved in the development of novel bioimaging tools. She was also involved in establishing a pipeline that is able to generate a detailed quantitative analysis of a large panel of molecules distributed in distinct compartments of the cell. A collaboration with the International Iberian Nanotechnology Lab (INL) further improved her interdisciplinarity. Along the years, M. Sofia Fernandes has also been investigating novel biomarkers and alternative therapeutic strategies for colorectal cancer focusing on the MAPK and PI3K signalling pathways and involved in better understanding the role of E-cadherin in gastric cancer. During her path, M. Sofia Fernandes has been actively involved in attracting funding, has been reviewer for peer-reviewed scientific journals, disseminated her research at international meetings and communication events; supervised and monitored students and has been involved in several projects.
