Inês Thomas Almeida is a Portuguese and Dominican Researcher and Professor at the Institute of Ethnomusicology – Centre for Studies in Music and Dance (INET-md) at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She holds a PhD in Historical Musicology and was awarded for her dissertation "The German Gaze: Music in Portugal at the end of the Ancien Régime, according to German sources" the highest qualification unanimously. She was FLAD/Saab Visiting Professor at University of Massachusetts Lowell, United States, and is an invited Professor of the PhD in Gender Studies at Universidade de Lisboa/Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She co-coordinates the INET-md Thematic Line Studies on Women, Gender and Sexuality and lectures seminars on women in music, methodology of travelogues as music sources, and Lusophone music and culture. Her research "FEMUS 18 – Spaces and Profiles of Women Making Music in 18th-Century Portugal" (2024–2030) is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. Her post-doctoral research (2022-2024) focused on Early Modern Songbooks (1500-1800). She was responsible for the poetic-musical catalogue of the research project "RELIT-Rom – Literary Revisions: The Creative Application of Early Modern Novels". Her research focuses on 18th-century music, travel accounts, women in music, Lusophone music and cultures, transatlantic music circulation, and early modern songbooks. She is the Science Communication Coordinator and a Management Committee Member of COST-Action "PCPSCE – Print Culture and Public Spheres in Central Europe (1500–1800)", funded for 2024–2028, a project which brings together more than 203 researchers from 36 countries to examine the role of book circulation in transforming the public sphere in Europe. She is the curator of CRIVO - Festival Women Composers (Lisbon, 2025) and served as co-Artistic director of the Madeira International Organ Festival 2025, dedicated to women in music. She was the Deputy Curator of the exhibition Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão (1923–1989): Let’s Take Risks, hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2023), and co-author, alongside Rui Vieira Nery, of the book "Let’s Take Risks: Selected Texts by Madalena de Azeredo Perdigão" (Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian & Tinta-da-China, 2023). She has many publications concerning the topics of 18th century music, women in music, and early modern songbooks and has been invited to give lectures at Harvard, Yale, Brown, Madrid, and Vienna universities. In 2024, she was included by the CIG – Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality in the list "Women for Equality", which highlights women in science, politics, culture, and activism who “both before and after the Carnation Revolution played fundamental roles, ensuring that women’s rights went beyond the boundaries of mere rhetoric.”
