Carla A.M. Lopes is an Assistant Researcher (CEEC 5th Edition - FCT) and principal investigator at the Biomedicine Institute (iBiMED) at the University of Aveiro. Her scientific interests are directed at understanding the signaling component of centrosomes and cilia and harness its potential to improve prognostic and therapeutic tools in disease, particularly in cancer. Carla holds a degree in Biology by the University of Aveiro (2006) and a PhD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology by the University of Leicester, UK (2011). Her PhD work on centriolar satellites brought new ideas and concepts that extended our understanding of ciliopathies, and was distinguished with several awards, including a Best PhD prize, the 2011 JCS Best Paper Prize, and the 2008 Young UK Cell Biologist from the British Society for Cell Biology.  For her postdoc, Carla then joined a multidisciplinary team aiming to understand the role of centrosomes in human cancer. Working at Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa (IPO), a leading hospital in cancer treatment and research, and at the multidisciplinary Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), Carla bridged fundamental and clinical research leading a study aimed at answering long-standing questions in her field. Her work established, for the first time, the timing and dynamics of centrosome abnormalities in human tumor initiation and progression (JCB 2018; cover; first and corresponding author). Illustrating the high quality and conceptual advance of this paper it has been highlighted in several Special Collections.  During her postdoctoral work Carla also contributed to numerous projects and published several articles (all in Q1 journals) and a book chapter (corresponding author). Carla has obtained several competitive grants (FCT, EMBO, Company of Biologists), including two research grants (FCT 2018, LPCC-NRS Terry Fox 2022) as Principal Investigator. She has supervised and trained several junior scientists at the BSc, MSc and PhD training levels and, from 2020 to 2023, she was also an Invited Professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Carla has also always been engaged in outreach activities: organizing several scientific events, disseminating her research in the media and organizing and participating in several outreach activities aimed at promoting scientific culture in society (e.g. European Researcher's Night, IGC Open Days, Maratona da Saúde). In 2023 Carla joined the iBiMED as a principal investigator. Her research uses experimental models that mimic human physiology to uncover mechanisms of centrosome deregulation, with the goal of providing innovative strategies to improve human health.
