I am a PhD student in Biochemistry at the Glyco Lab - Functional Glycobiology and the Macromolecular Crystallography Groups, from FCT-NOVA (UCIBIO), under the supervision of Doctor Angelina Palma and co-supervision of Doctor Ana Luísa Carvalho and Doctor Yan Liu from Imperial College London. My research interest is to study, at a molecular level, protein-glycan interactions that operate biological systems in human health, to understand the biological mechanisms. Towards this, my main scientific fields interests are Structural Biology and Glycobiology, in which I have been pursuing my training. From Feb 2017 to Nov 2019, I had a position as an MSc Research Assistant at Macromolecular Crystallography and Glyco Lab Groups (UCIBIO-NOVA). During this period, I integrated the teams of 3 funded projects, which allowed me to gain knowledge in different biological systems and acquire solid experience in protein expression and purification, X-ray Crystallography and state-of-the-art techniques to assess the specificity and affinity of protein-ligand interactions, such as glycan microarrays, MST and ITC. My PhD research project, entitled "Translating the human-microbiome molecular cross-talk using glycan microarray and structural biology strategies", aims to decipher how the structural diversity of host glycans is exploited by bacteria and how it influences commensal vs pathogenic interactions. My work resulted in 2 first-author and 5 co-author peer-reviewed publications in international journals, 1 book chapter, 11 oral communications and 21 Conference Posters. I have been awarded 4 competitive fellowships in funded projects, received 2 travel bursaries to attend international scientific meetings, a 4-year PhD scholarship and 1 best Poster Prize. During these years, I have been improving my transferable skills by attending workshops and other events, I also had the opportunity to organize several events (conference/seminar/Exhibition), and I have tutored different BSc and MSc students. I’m currently part of the internationally funded project GLYCOTwinning (HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-101079417) and I am contributing to a nationally funded project GlycOSELECT (2022.06104.PTDC).
