Rui Silva (Silva R) is currently a Junior Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) - University of Minho and the Associate Director at the Molecular Biotechnology Laboratory (LBM). He holds a PhD degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Minho (2019). His research focuses on the development of microbial cell factories using metabolic engineering approaches for the production of high-value chemicals by fermentation. During his PhD, he systematically characterized a filamentous fungus (Ashbya gossypii) at physiological, cellular and molecular level and designed strategies for its development as a cell factory. In 2017, he performed a scientific mission at University of Salamanca (Spain). To date, he is author of seven publications in international peer-reviewed journals, three oral communications and six poster communications in peer-reviewed scientific conferences. Additionally, Rui complemented his laboratory experience with training on innovation management (product development), entrepreneurship (intellectual property and regulation, market analysis and financial and funding strategy) and effective communication skills and public speaking. Since 2019, as Associate Director of LBM, Rui is directly involved in the management of the laboratory that receives 10+ researchers. He is also regularly involved in scientific outreach activities.
