Begoña Farré Torras (PhD 2020) is a CEEC-FCT researcher and Board member at Instituto de História da Arte, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she coordinates the research group Art Theory, Historiography and Criticism. Her research focuses on 20th century muralism from a transnational perspective that examines mural theory, practice and politics in Portugal and Spain, and their links with muralism in Latin America and elsewhere in Europe. She has developed this line of research as a member of two interrelated funded projects - Southern Modernisms EXPL/CPC-HAT/0191/2013 (2014-2015), followed by PIM: Iberian Modernisms and the Primitivist Imaginary PTDC/ART-HIS/29837/2017, (2018-2022), - resulting in several journal articles, book chapters, catalogue texts and conference presentations including, most recently, a contribution to the edited volume The Primitivist Imaginary in Iberian and Transatlantic Modernisms, eds. Joana Cunha Leal and Mariana Pinto dos Santos, Routledge (2024). As the co-PI of the seed project Ventos e Casamentos: Obras de Artistas Espanhóis em Portugal na Primeira Metade do Século XX, Torras co-supervised an MA dissertation on the Spanish artist Daniel Vázquez Díaz (1882-1962) with a particular focus on the political dimension of his 1930 mural programme for the Arrabida Monastery in Huelva, Spain. Torras´ latest research explores the possibilities and challenges of using digital technologies for preserving and exhibiting modern mural heritage, and for engaging non-academic audiences in its study and public discussion. She has presented papers on these subjects at the 27th Annual Conference for Digital Research in the Humanities and Arts - Performing Cultural Heritage in the Digital Present, Turin, 2023, and at the 4th National Meeting of IN2PAST Researchers, Lisbon, 2024. Torras is a member of the RIHA Journal editorial team for Portugal since 2014. From this position she set up a training programme in 2022 that gives PhD students the chance to develop their own writing and editorial skills through supervised, hands-on involvement in the entire editorial process, from manuscript submission and peer review to final copy editing.
