The PI Carlos Frazão leads the ITQB-NOV Structural Biology Laboratory aiming the understanding of biochemical processes at atomic level, mainly based on the determination of biological macromolecules 3D structures using X-rays diffraction analysis. The interpretation of these structures originates clues on how biomolecules may interact, and has enabled the rationalization of applications in diverse fields of life sciences. The PI promotes the collaborations with other research groups to study key biological macromolecules, like proteins and complexes between proteins and nucleic-acids. The scope of developed projects includes electrons transfer meatllo proteins like iron sulfur proteins, mono and multi-heme cytochromes, hybrid cluster and Rieske proteins, flavo di-iron proteins, heme catalese, sulfur oxygenase-reductase, persulfide dioxigenase as well as various enzymes like the messenger RNA control ribonuclease II, aspartic or cysteine proteases, amidase, manganese superoxide dismutase, poly-saccharide synthesis enzymes, osteocalcine or directed evolution improved enzymes, among other examples.
