Ana Matilde Sousa is an artist, academic, and teacher in the Arts & Humanities, specializing in Japanese pop culture and the phenomenon of Japanization within global circulations, appropriation, and remediation of images. Her artworks have been showcased in artistic publications and venues across Portugal and worldwide, including Europe (from Spain to France and Finland), Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong. Notably, her collaborative piece "YWY: Searching for a Character In-Between East and West" has been displayed at prestigious institutions, such as Palais de Tokyo and Art Basel. She has authored several articles and book chapters published by high-quality academic publishers, e.g., Routledge, University of Minnesota Press, and Taylor & Francis.; she has participated in international conferences across Europe, the US, and East Asia (South Korea, Japan). Holding a Master’s and a Doctoral degree in Fine Arts–Painting, her work is characterized by interdisciplinarity, covering a wide range of media from painting and drawing to comics, photography, video, and digital art, as well as the merging of traditional fine arts with Internet aesthetics, manga, anime, and video games. Her interests have expanded to the Anthropocene and the concept of practiced-based research methodologies in the arts, leading to her participation in various organizational, curatorial, scientific, and educational activities in these fields. In 2022, Sousa became a FCT Junior Researcher at CIEBA-FBAUL after her application “PLOT AGAINST. A painting-based research project into the pen plotter and other peripheral devices in the cyborgian imagination” secured funding through the highly competitive contest Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus (CEEC) of FCT-MCTES, ranking in the top three of her category. Previously, she had received a scholarship for her PhD research by the same institution. She regularly holds lectures at several Portuguese higher education and artistic institutions and served as an Invited Assistant Professor for the Bachelor’s degree in Painting at FBAUL, where, in her role as Researcher, she continues to teach and tutor students on their artistic projects in the Bachelor's Degree in Painting in the courses Visual Arts II and Painting I, and is responsible for the Painting sessions in the Research Methodologies Seminar of the Doctorate in Fine Arts. Her CV served as a core CV for FCT's evaluation of the CIEBA research center in 2024. She has also served as a member of the Social Sciences and Humanities panel in the FCT 2024 PhD Scholarship Contest – Specific Application Line in Non-Academic Environment, in addition to being a member of several artistic contest juries. She was a member of the COST Action iCon-MICS – Investigation on Comics and Graphic Novels in the Iberian Cultural Area, where she served as Grant Awarding Coordinator for the project's extension (4 years). Under her artistic name, Hetamoé, she co-founded the fanzine label Clube do Inferno in 2012 and the artist collective MASSACRE in 2020. She regularly participated in exhibitions in galleries and museums.
