Sandra Borges has a degree in Microbiology at Catholic University of Portugal (UCP), a post-graduation in Clinical and Forensic Analytic Toxicology at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto and a PhD Degree in Biotechnology at UCP. Her research work generated 48 publications, namely 31 papers in international journals with peer review, 2 conference papers, 14 book chapters and 1 book. She has an h-index of 17, and more than 1200 citations (Scopus metrics). She has participated in 11 scientific projects and in several national/international scientific conferences, presenting more than 50 communications and being invited to give 12 lectures about added value products. She has been involved in the supervision/co-supervision of 40 ungraduated and graduate students in areas such as microbiology, biotechnology, genetic, biomedical engineering. The innovative character of her research work and its potential of commercialization has generated 2 filed patents, 1 granted patent and 4 awards. She provided consulting services on food innovation and sustainability and she also worked in an American multinational company of high-tech Biotechnology (Amyris). During the academic path she also developed novel products such as: probiotic formulations for vaginal infections, biomaterials for wound healing, probiotic juices and disinfectants. Currently, she is a doctoral researcher in CBQF, with expertise in development and characterization of functional compounds (biopeptides and lipids) and their application in the design of new products.
