Manuela Machado is currently a Researcher at the Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina (CBQF). She is also a member of its Safety Committee and the Researcher responsible for the Project Vertical Alimentar, part of the PRR-funded Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul project. In this role, she oversees day-to-day interactions with industrial and academic partners and manages the overall technical and financial execution of the project. Throughout her research career, Manuela has been dedicated to developing agro-food-based solutions for the food and nutraceutical industries. Her strong industrial focus is evident in her participation in four industrial R&D projects and one additional project of a more fundamental nature. This industry collaboration resulted in the creation of a functional canned tuna product featuring EFSA-approved cardiovascular health claims, which is currently available on the market. An analysis of her CV highlights three main research themes: i) Valorization of agro-food byproducts within a circular economy framework, exploring their biological potential. ii) Characterization of extracted compounds' biological potential, focusing on properties such as modulation of cellular metabolism and immune response. ii) Design and formulation of delivery solutions for bioactive compounds. Manuela is the author of 37 peer-reviewed international papers and 7 book chapters, serving as the first author in 47% of these publications (17 papers and 4 book chapters). Additionally, she was the Invited Editor of the Bioactive Lipids book published by Elsevier. As of November 2024, her work has been cited 298 times by 274 papers, giving her an h-index of 9, according to Scopus. Her primary publication areas include Agricultural and Biological Sciences, followed by Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology. She has presented her research at several national and international conferences, delivering 9 oral presentations and 24 poster communications. Manuela has tutored four visiting MSc students and supervised several BSc students, including 1 as supervisor and 3 as co-supervisor. In recognition of her outstanding scientific contributions during her PhD research, she received the First Prize in the Mentorado Comendador Arménio Miranda competition by Frulact Academy. More recently, she was awarded CBQF's annual incentive for extraordinary outputs in 2023.
