In 2010, I received a PhD in Biology from the University of Aveiro (EUR>80k FCT mixed PhD studentship SFRH/BD/19640/2004), resulting in two papers. Afterward, I collaborated with the IEC in Portugal on Science outreach and produced several manuals. In 2012, I resumed my scientific career after obtaining funding (EUR>7K) through the European Commission Lifelong Learning Programme for a Leonardo da Vinci Post-Doc traineeship at the Professor Timothy R. Walsh lab (School of Medicine, Cardiff University): Animals, clinical environment, water and patients colonised and infected with multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) carrying blaNDM and blaCTXM15 in Karachi, Pakistan. Presentations in conferences and two undergraduate students supervision resulted from this work. In August 2013, I was appointed as a research associate for R-GNOSIS (EC/FP7/282512/EU). European project exploring cutting-edge interventions to reduce carriage, infection and spread of MDR-GNB. I was responsible for the molecular microbiology support for the clinical work packages and performed audits to labs involved in the study. Presentations at conferences resulted from this work. From March 2015, I was research associate and lead scientist for BARNARDS, a combination of two research programs, USD4.28M (OPP1119772) and USD849K (OP1191522; co-applicant), funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. BARNARDS developed a network and analytical tools to understand the burden of antimicrobial resistance, risk factors and microbiological causes of infant sepsis across 12 clinical sites in seven LMICs in Africa and South-Asia. Several publications resulted from this work. I supervised staff, students and lab visitors from the BARNARDS network; I liaised with project funders, collaborators and other stakeholders. I was given the ISF/ESCMID Sepsis Award 2019 for my outstanding work during BARNARDS. I showcased TRW lab research in outreach events. In April 2019, my family and I decided to move back to Portugal. Given my proficiency in Oxford Nanopore Technologies methods, I was recruited as a contracted researcher in iBiMED, UA, for the project CANCYL (PTDC/BIA-MIC/31849/2017). I implemented ONT sequencing and data analysis and ONT & Illumina hybrid analysis pipelines for the study and genomic surveillance of fungi and characterisation of the genetic microdiversity of clinically important Candida spp. from different human sources in the context of commensalism and disease. Publications resulted from this work. Currently, I am contracted under the project FunResist (PTDC/BIA-MIC/1141/2021) to identify genetic markers of antifungal resistance, combining combining population genomics, GWAS and eQTL mapping. I supervise and tutor students. I was a member of iBiMED volunteer taskforce for the screening of SARS-CoV-2 for COVID-19 diagnosis in the Centre region of Portugal. I am a member of the steering committees of iBiMED GreenLab and GreenLabs Portugal to promote sustainable research activities in biomedical research. I am a Program Based Learning tutor and a supervisor of Research in Biomedicine of the Biomedical Sciences degree at the Department of Medical Sciences in UA; I am involved in Science outreach activities of iBiMED and UA such as Junior/Summer Academy and TechDays. I was a jury member for two MsC theses, peer-review research articles for various journals, and review research proposals (UKRI; COST actions). My research interests are Microbiology, Genomics, Metagenomics and Bioinformatics analysis for the characterisation of microbes and microbiota associated with disease and integrate multimodal data to study the microbiota interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. I was on maternity leave between August 2016 and February 2017. To be able to cope personal and professional development, namely by having an important role in impactful and purposeful projects as BARNARDS while being a mother is, for me, a great accomplishment.
