I am Principal Researcher at CESAM - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies & ECOMARE - Laboratory for Innovation and Sustainability of Marine Biological Resources, of University of Aveiro. I graduated at the University of Aveiro and specialized in diatoms eco-physiology during the PhD at the University of Sheffield (UK) and in close collaboration with the University of Leipzig (Germany). Since 2011, I got passionate about a unique algae-animal association: Kleptoplasty in Sacoglossa sea slugs, for which I was recently awarded an ERC Starting Grant. I have expertise on algae physiology (diatoms and macroalgae), having worked at several European Universities: Norway (Bergen), UK (Sheffield & Cambridge), Germany (Leipzig), and Denmark (Copenhagen). I have co-authored 51 peered-reviewed works, with an h-index of 22 and over 1300 citations. I coordinate/have coordinated 2 European projects (ERC-2020-STG; FP7-Marie Curie-CIG) and 3 national projects (2 R&D projects; 1 IF-Exploratory), with a total funding over 2.7M. I currently supervise 2 PhD students and 1 Master Student. My main topics of research are (i) functional chloroplasts inside animal cells (ii) algae ecology and physiology, frequently in collaboration with SMEs companies for optimisation of algae growth and valorisation.
