I am a Principal Researcher (tenured) at the University of Aveiro: Research Unit CESAM - Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies / Department of Biology / ECOMARE - Laboratory for Innovation and Sustainability of Marine Biological Resources. Throughout my training, I worked at the University of Bergen (Norway) as an undergrad Erasmus Student, at the University of Sheffield (UK) and at the University of Leipzig (Germany) for my PhD thesis work, and at the University of Cambridge (UK) and later at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) for two distinct PostDoctoral works. I continue to work collaboratively at the national and international levels, as I believe networking and exchanging ideas are the best ways to advance science. Since 2011, I have been passionate about the incredible chloroplast-bearing sea slugs, for which I was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2021. I coordinate/have coordinated 2 European projects (ERC-2020-STG; FP7-Marie Curie-CIG) and 3 national projects (2 R&D projects; 1 IF-Exploratory), totalling over 2.7M, and I am/was a team member in a few more projects. My main interests in research are to understand (i) algae ecophysiology, for optimisation of growth and biomass valorisation; (ii) how algal chloroplasts function inside animal cells; and (iii) the development of Isotopic Ratio Analysis (EA-IRMS for bulk tissues and GC-MS-IRMS for compound specific analysis) for understanding metabolic patways in symbiotic associations, as well as ecological trophic levels inteactions.
