I am a multidisciplinary scientist with over 16 years of research experience in the academic environment. I graduated in Applied Biology in 2003 and obtained my PhD in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cells (at I3Bs) in 2011, both from the University of Minho. Furthermore, I developed part of my PhD research at the Universitá La Sapienza in Rome in the Stem Cells Lab under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Bianco and at the University of Beytepe in Ankara. My PhD work was focused on the development of a functional bone tissue engineering approach using chitosan derived biomaterials and human bone marrow stromal cells. From 2011 to 2016 I developed post-doc research at the I3Bs group, working with fetal stem cells and novel methodologies to biofunctionalize biomaterials. I also worked with nanoparticles for applications in biomedicine and 3D models for tumor microenvironment. During that period, I was awarded an intramural project as PI and another as Co-PI. At the end of 2016, I joined the Portuguese Catholic University research team to perform post-doc research with chitosan and codfish derived hydroxyapatite formulations to circumvent periprosthetic joint infections, with a patent submission ongoing. I am the author/co-author of 29 articles and 3 book chapters, with a h-index of 15 and to date with more than 1200 citations. I participated in several research projects as a team member and as a researcher and was involved in the organization of scientific conferences. I am an invited expert reviewer for European Commission, WHRI-ACADEMY, German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research and Development, Romanian Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development, and Innovation, and Consultancy Services for Project Peer Review of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, as well as for several international journals. I also possess major experience in writing grants for FP7, and Horizon 2020, as well as for FCT. Currently, I am a Researcher at the Genetic Dynamics of Cancer Cells Group at i3S/IPATIMUP. My main research interests are the study of the biodistribution of pancreatic cancer exosomes during disease progression and to understand how impairing these communication routes may hamper tumor growth, metastasis, and improve therapy response.
