Hélder Baptista received a BSc degree in Biotechnology at the University of Aveiro in June 2019 with the final grade of 16 and his final project resulted in a presentation and published abstract at the 6th International Polysaccharide Conference: EPNOE. He later obtained an MSc in Biomedical Materials and Devices also at the University of Aveiro, in November 2021 with a final grade of 17. During this period, he served has class representative held a 17-month research grant (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-031679) on self-assembled peptide-based piezoelectric materials, which resulted in a book chapter titled "Organic and Biological Piezoelectric Materials" in "Piezoelectric Polymers and Polymer Composites for Advanced Applications". He subsequently worked on the CLEVER project (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-039699) at the Department of Materials and Ceramic Engineering (University of Aveiro), before starting his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, for which Hélder was awarded an FCT grant fellowship - https://doi.org/10.54499/2022.11211.BD - to develop bio-based colorimetric indicators for assessing freshness of packaged fish. His PhD work has led to a first-author article in Carbohydrate Polymers - "Polysaccharide-based screen-printed colorimetric sensor for amines detection in packaged fish" - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.carbpol.2025.124012, with two other articles under writing. Hélder is also a co-author in another publication - "Development of smart food packaging from bread waste-derived starch and carbon quantum dots" - https://doi.org/10.1016/j.indcrop.2025.121426. Hélder has also tutored bachelor’s and master’s students during his PhD, giving him some early experience with supervision.
