Architect, PhD, researcher, my research trajectory focuses on urban regeneration and sustainability, combining architectural design, urban history, and participatory methodologies to address contemporary challenges such as climate adaptation, inclusion, and social cohesion. My work is characterised by the use of Living Labs as research infrastructures, integrating academic research, teaching, and real-world experimentation. My academic background articulates the scale of the architectural object with the scale of the city, as denoted by my degree in Architecture (Faculty of Architecture, University of Florence, Italy – FAUnifi), my pre-PhD research experience on design of hospital systems and urban wellbeing environments (FAUnifi) and PhD in urban history and urban planning history (Instituto Superior Técnico, ULisboa - IST). My PhD research involved extensive work in national and international archives through sources such as municipal records, urban plans, and historical maps, cataloguing and analysing thousands of documents for systematic urban history research, leading to the construction of structured databases and analytical frameworks that link historical evidence to contemporary urban conditions and planning challenges. Building on my doctoral research experience, I have directed my research trajectory towards socially relevant themes, through experimental research shared with students and by creating strong bridges between academia and society, exploring the following research lines: • Inclusive and Accessible Cities within the H2020 ECF4CLIM project, I coordinated an Urban Living Lab at IST, leading a multidisciplinary student team (from Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering and Communication Design, as part of coursework within their degree programme) to regenerate a campus green space, applying universal design principles to improve accessibility. The project included a)the design of a project of regeneration of the green area including an accessible pathway, using sustainable materials b)the development of inclusive signage. • Green Urban Structures and Nature-Based Solutions This research advances biodiversity and permaculture through academic Living Labs, fostering co-design and co-management, greywater recycling systems, and the regeneration of green spaces with native species, while supporting master’s and doctoral research. • Sustainability Transitions in Higher Education I conceived and coordinated the initiative “Sustainable Técnico-Environment, Society, Economy” within the Técnico Environmental Science and Engeneering Platform. The initiative aimed to integrate sustainability across the university by using the campus as a space for experimentation, implementing living labs, fostering transversal collaboration with R&D centres, services and student organizations, supporting experimental MSc and PhD theses. • Urban Regeneration and Public Policy Interface adopting a multidimensional approach aimed at the integrated improvement of the physical, social, and environmental conditions of urban areas, including: [2022–2024] Cooperation with Lisbon City Council-Department of Social Development (Portugal) and CASA Association (Support Centre for Homeless People) on a project for the regeneration of the courtyard of the Municipal Reception Centre for Homeless People in Lisbon, developed through a) projects carried out by Architecture students from IST and b) the installation of a social permaculture garden in the centre’s courtyard. [from 2026] Cooperation with Lisbon City Council-Department of Urbanism (Portugal) on research on urban planning of Lisbon in the 1930s and 1940s, and on urban regeneration in Lisbon, with an interest in collaborating on the future research projects.
