My scientific path so far has been quite diverse, and I think it reflects my ability to adapt and to learn new things. During this path I gathered relevant management and lecturing experience, besides the purely scientific competences. I guess I have already garnered some scientific experience, either from a technical view, either from a more managerial standpoint. I completed a PhD in Biosciences (Toxicology branch), that followed a Master’s Degree in Cell Biology (pre-Bologna) and a Degree in Biochemistry. I first was a Post-Doc fellow at CICS (University of Beira Interior) by May 2013. I was hired to work in proteomics in a new lab, but since the equipment was not in place when I arrived, I ended up becoming responsible to get everything working. That involved contacting manufacturers, helping their technicians, working with local technicians in order to guarantee all the equipment requirements were met, organizing initial courses, building the inventory. I was also responsible for all equipment and lab maintenance. I performed proteomic analysis (MALDI and 2-d electrophoresis) of vitreous humor samples. I published two reviews (and a proceedings in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science) about proteomics in vitreous humor. In October 2014, I was hired by CBQF (Portuguese Catholic University) again as a Post-Doc fellow. Here I performed managerial tasks, such as operational cost estimate (of all the common equipments of the Center; a hard task from which I learned a lot), maintenance and record of equipment usage logs, setting up new scientific equipment and supervision and support for equipment use by other Center researchers. In terms of research, it involved fractionating and analyzing a cork homogenate. That research was not published, since it was commissioned by a company. I was hired as a Post-Doc research fellow in at ICBAS (University of Porto) in June 2016. Before that, I wrote a review paper on methylxanthine structure-activity relationships, which was an area of interest for my new supervisor. I worked on Reproductive Biology for a year, investigating the role of glycerol and glycerol transport in male fertility. Here, at UMIB (ICBAS, University of Porto), I was asked by the Director to assume the role of Science Manager (from December, until I left, in June). I accumulated these responsibilities (attending official meetings, providing targeted information for grant applications, disseminating relevant content among the unit researchers and providing admin counselling during application process) with my everyday research. In 2017 I was invited to lecture classes of Molecular Human Genetics and Genetics of Metabolic Diseases, both belonging to Master’s programs at University of Beira Interior (a total of 16 hours of theoretical classes). I mostly enjoyed the Genetics of Metabolic Diseases classes, since I built the program regarding lipid and protein molecular diseases. Now I am working at CESAM, University of Aveiro, as a fellow of the GENIALG project (a project aiming at the valorization of green and brown algae in an EU context), but also developing soon to be published work with marine mammals.
