Adriana Oliveira (AO) was born in 1998 in Matosinhos, Porto. AO has a degree in Biology since 2019 and a master’s degree in Biological Aquatic Resources since 2021, both from the University of Porto (UP). She started her professional career as an intern at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research) in 2018, during her BSc internship, in which , she studied how environmental stress impacts marine organisms, using oxidative stress analysis as a tool. Her MSc dissertation was developed in collaboration with the NUTRIMU (Fish Nutrition and Immunobiology research group) from CIIMAR and EPPO (Aquaculture Research Station, from IPMA), supervised by auxiliary researchers Dr. Ana Couto and Dr. Cláudia Serra. Her dissertation focused on the impact and diagnosis of marine fish diseases, using histological and molecular biology tools. In addition, she worked with macro- and microalgae as functional ingredients with immune-stimulating properties in feeds for meagre. This enabled AO to expand her knowledge in fish health and to become more aware of the need to improve fish welfare, where the use of functional feeds could be a valuable strategy. After finishing her MSc, in 2022, AO continued her scientific career, and was awarded two Erasmus+ Internship grants, in the scope of aquaculture nutrition and aquatic animal welfare, under the supervision of Dr. Amalia Jimenez (mobility to Spain) and Dr. Ike Olivotto (mobility to Italy). AO has co-authored a publication in a scientific peer-review journal Environmental Research in 2021 (10.1016/j.envres.2021.110753). Moreover, she was able to present part of her work at the 1st CEEBI (State Congress of Bioscience Students) in Granada, Spain. During her career path, AO has also been involved in several Education & Outreach activities. AO belonged to the organising committee of a marine biology student congress from UP (“Jornadas do Mar”) and participated in 4 scientific events and workshops, including the European Aquaculture Society conference (2022). She also volunteered at 2 stands in science fairs promoted by UP and CIIMAR, a scientific dissemination event during her stay in Granada, Spain, and in socially-driven activities (polling station, dog shelter). In her short scientific career, these activities have given her important tools, namely in event organization, resources management and scientific communication to audiences of diverse knowledge backgrounds. Early this year, AO joined LANUCE (Nutrition, Growth and Quality of fish research group) from CIIMAR under the project BLUE BIOECONOMY INNOVATION PACT - Vertical Feed (C644915664-00000026). This project has given AO the opportunity to deepen her knowledge in the research of novel, low-carbon functional ingredients that can improve the growth and welfare of farmed fish. Since then, AO has developed important skills related to daily fish husbandry procedures, chemical characterization of feeds and fish tissues.
