Adriana Oliveira (AO), born in 1998 in Matosinhos, Porto, holds a BSc in Biology (2019) and an MSc in Biological Aquatic Resources (2021) from the University of Porto (UP). She began her research career in 2018 at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research), where she studied the effects of environmental stress on marine organisms using oxidative stress markers. Her MSc dissertation, developed in collaboration with CIIMAR’s NUTRIMU group and IPMA’s EPPO station, focused on the diagnosis of fish diseases through histological and molecular tools, as well as the use of algae-based functional feeds to enhance fish immunity and welfare. This experience deepened her interest in sustainable aquaculture practices. Following her MSc, AO was awarded two Erasmus+ Internship grants to work on aquaculture nutrition and aquatic animal welfare in Spain and Italy, under the supervision of Dr. Amalia Jimenez and Dr. Ike Olivotto. She has co-authored two scientific publications and has been actively involved in science communication and outreach, including organizing the “Jornadas do Mar” student congress, participating in international conferences, and volunteering at science fairs and community events. In 2023, AO joined CIIMAR’s LANUCE group under the BLUE BIOECONOMY INNOVATION PACT – Vertical Feed project, focusing on sustainable functional ingredients to improve fish growth and health. She gained hands-on experience in fish husbandry, feed and tissue analysis, histology, oxidative stress, and gene expression techniques. AO is currently pursuing a PhD with the LANUCE group. Her research, titled “Priming for Welfare: Novel Hydrolysates in the Promotion of Fish Robustness Through Modulation of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis,” aims to develop innovative nutritional strategies to enhance fish welfare and resilience in aquaculture systems.

Activity description Institution / Organization
2022/09/16 - 2022/12/15 During my Erasmus+ internship at DiSVA (Università Politecnica delle Marche, Italy), I assisted with a seabass feeding trial using insect meal in RAS and aquaponics systems. I gained experience in histology, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, and qPCR, and helped maintain aquarium facilities with zebrafish, ornamental fish, and European seabass. Università Politecnica delle Marche Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e dell¿Ambiente, Italy
2022/03/01 - 2022/09/01 During my Erasmus+ internship at the University of Granada, I studied the health of Anemonia sulcata under rearing conditions, learning techniques like protein quantification, electrophoresis, and oxidative stress analysis. I also volunteered at Desgranando Ciencia 8 and presented a poster at CEEBI. Universidad de Granada Facultad de Ciencias, Spain
2020/09/01 - 2021/12/14 During my Master’s internship, I analyzed seabass samples with unknown pathologies using histological and molecular techniques at CIIMAR’s NUTRIMU group. I also contributed to marine larvae rearing and a meagre growth trial with immunostimulant feeds at IPMA’s EPPO station.
