Prof Ana Martinez is research professor at Biological Research Center of Spanish Council for Research (CIB-CSIC) and member of Biomedical Research center on neurodegenerative diseases (CIBERNEDISCiii). Her main interests are focused in the Discovery and development of effective treatments for CNS unmet diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal cord trauma and multiple sclerosis. Her work is in close conection with the pharmaceutical sector and many of her results are transferred to the productive sphere. She was R&D director of NeuroPharma from 2002-08 and founder of the spin-off ANKAR Pharma in 2014. Thus, some of her drug candidates are on clinical trials, such as tideglusib, a GSK3 inhibitor. Since 2009, Prof Martinez has led different projects to discover new drugs for ALS and currently is the coordinator of a large network, called ELA_Madrid, that joints multidisciplinar efforts of research groups from hospitals, university and CSIC all of them based in Madrid with the main goal to discover and advance new drug candidates for this devastating disease. Different compounds such as the PKis here mentioned, but also modulator of mitophagy and/or NfR2 cell signalling have been idetified with great potential for the disease. Most significant outputs in more than 30 years of experience in drug discovery and development both in academic and industrial environments, are to move three compounds born in her lab to clinical trials. Tideglusib, a GSK3 inhibiotr, is now in phase III for miotonyc dystrophy and ready to start a Phase II for ALS. NP-61, a modulator of beta-amiloide finished phase I in 2008, and S14, a PDE7 inhibitor, is pending approval in AEMPS for Parkinson's disease. Author of > 270 publications (h=46), >30 active patents (6 of them transferred to ARACLON, AMO Pharma and ANKAR Pharma), several international conferences and editor of >6 books. ORCID: 0000-0002-2707-8110. Since 2018, she is the coordinator of a solid research network funded by Madrid Community to develop new drugs for ALS. Finally, her laboratory is CIBERNED member and validated chemistry site of EUOPENSCREEN.
