Cecilia M.P. Rodrigues completed her degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Lisbon in 1992, and later obtained her PhD in Pharmacy (Biochemistry) in 1996 from the same institution, after completing PhD training at the University of Cincinnati, OH, USA under the guidance of K.D.R. Setchell. She then pursued postdoctoral work at the University of Minnesota, MN, USA with C.J. Steer. Since 2009, she has held the position of Full Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon. Rodrigues has published close to 300 indexed peer-reviewed papers, 20 book chapters and 4 global coverage patents (h-index 70 and ca. 24,000 citations in Scopus). Her research interests are discovering novel mechanism-based molecular targets for therapeutic intervention and diagnosis in inflammatory, neurodegenerative and oncogenic diseases. Rodrigues leads a laboratory that focuses on signalling pathways involved in cell death, differentiation and proliferation, as well as interorgan communication by bile acids and other biomolecules. She uses relevant experimental models and patient samples, and employs genetic and pharmacological strategies to interrogate transcriptomics and proteomics profiles. Her research has developed promising technologies protected by global patents and explored by spin-offs that have moved to clinical trials worldwide. Rodrigues has held leadership positions, including founder and Head of Department (2021; 2011-18) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, and Director of the Research Institute for Medicines (2013-20). Currently, she is vice-rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Lisbon (2021-25). She created and currently directs the PhD Programme in Medicines and Pharmaceutical Innovation (2015-present) and the Master Course in Biopharmaceutical Sciences (2010-present). She has supervised close to 100 PhD students and postdoctoral scientists, and 80 MSc students. Rodrigues has received awards, including the EASL Sheila Sherlock Award in 2000 and most recently the Krebs Medal FENS in 2022. She has been invited to speak at international conferences and has served on various national and international editorial (Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology) and grant review (FCT Portugal, A3ES Portugal, BMBF Germany, MRC UK, ARN and CNRS France, ISCIII Spain, MOH Italy, and SFI Ireland) boards. Rodrigues has secured independent funding from public competitive sources and/or through private investment, amounting to ca. 20 M€. She has a background in technology transfer, technology commercialization and academic-industrial collaborations, including with AstraZeneca Open Innovation, UK.
