Ana Sofia Guedes Gorito dos Santos

A. Sofia G. G. Santos holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), completed in 2018, which included a short academic stay at the Università degli Studi di Padova. In 2019, she began her research career as a Research Fellow in the InTreat project, where she was responsible for the synthesis, characterization and application of carbon-based catalysts in heterogeneous catalytic processes, particularly ozonation and reduction reactions for water treatment. In 2021, she was awarded a doctoral scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) to pursue a PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering, which she completed in June 2025 with Cum Laude distinction. Her doctoral research focused on the design and development of a novel integrated water treatment technology for the simultaneous removal of organic and inorganic contaminants, combining advanced heterogeneous catalysis with the synthesis and characterization of innovative macrostructured catalysts tailored for efficient and safe operation in continuous systems. Throughout her PhD, she developed strong expertise in advanced water treatment technologies, catalyst design, and oxidation and reduction catalytic processes, with a particular emphasis on environmentally sustainable and socially oriented applications. This work culminated in an international patent application (PCT/IB2024/058128) related to an integrated catalytic system for drinking water treatment and was further recognized with the Best PhD Thesis award from the journal Processes. In 2022, she was awarded a highly competitive Fulbright Scholarship, which enabled a five-month research stay at The University of Texas at Austin, where she expanded her expertise in advanced nanomaterials synthesis, particularly in the design of highly active and selective metal alloys for water treatment, and received advanced training in characterization techniques such as XRD and TEM. This international experience fostered strong scientific collaborations and resulted in joint publications. Her PhD work led to the publication of 12 peer-reviewed scientific articles as first author in Q1 and Q2 journals, complemented by 11 additional collaborative publications in Q1 journals, totaling 23 scientific publications, with two more currently under revision. Her research has also been disseminated through 20 presentations at national and international conferences. In parallel, she has contributed to the academic community through participation in the organization of scientific conferences, leadership roles within the YEuCat network, and the supervision of undergraduate students. Since June 2025, she has been working as an Assistant Researcher at the LSRE-LCM laboratory within the H2Driven Agenda Project, where she applies her expertise in catalyst synthesis and advanced characterization to the development of highly active and selective metallic catalysts for CO2 conversion into methanol.
