Ece CANLI

Ece Canli is a researcher and artist whose work sits at the intersection of decolonial queer feminist epistemologies, material regimes and body politics; more specifically, socio-spatio-material constitutions of gender, sexuality, race and other identity categories. She is currently a full-time researcher at CECS (The Communication and Society Research Centre) in the Cultural Studies cluster and A Passeio research group at the University of Minho (PT), contracted by the Scientific Employment Stimulus (2nd edition) of FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia), where she investigates spatial, material and technological conditions of the criminal justice system, queer incarceration, penal design and abolition feminism. She holds a Ph.D. in Design at the University of Porto (PT) and an MFA in Experience Design at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design (SE). As a researcher and educator, she lectured internationally and taught topics including material culture and identity, gender and visual literacy, and semiotics, and published in various journals and edited volumes for publishers including SAGE, Bloomsbury and Routledge on queer materialities, critical making and penal design. She is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed research collective Decolonising Design Group, and a member of the Carceral Geography Working Group (CGWG) (UK), AtGender (NL) and SOPCOM (PT) research entities, with the ongoing research and formation on practices of transformative justice. She was a full-time Assistant Professor (2019-2020) at University Lusíada-Norte where she taught Design History, Design Theory, Studio Projects and Methodologies (Master's in Design), and was a guest lecturer at University of Minho (2021) in the disciplines of Design, Culture and Society and Gender, Communication and Language (Master's at Sociology of Gender and Sociology). Ece supervises theses in graduate levels and participates in juries of dissertation defences. As an artist, she explores counterfactual narrativities of marginalised bodies, extralinguistic expressions and spatiality, working with extended vocal techniques, electronics and performing body, and composing/producing sound for staged performances, exhibitions and films both in collaborations and as a soloist.
