Tomás Michael do Rosário da Luz completed a Master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering at the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL) in November 2023, following a Bachelor’s degree in the same field and institution obtained in July 2021. He graduated with final grades of 17/20 (MSc) and 15/20 (BSc), reflecting a strong academic performance and commitment to excellence in engineering and environmental sciences. Since November 2021, he has been working as a research fellow at the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering – Laboratory of Catalysis and Materials (LSRE-LCM), a research unit with a pole at IPL. During this period, he has developed solid experience in laboratory-based research, particularly in water quality physicochemical and microbiological analyses, and in the development and optimization of innovative technologies for wastewater treatment and resource recovery. His work integrates practical laboratory skills with process engineering knowledge and environmental sustainability principles. His master’s thesis, entitled “Treatment of pig wastewater through vermifiltration and hydroponics”, was conducted within the STARSUS project (UIDB/50020/2020). This research focused on sustainable, integrated solutions for wastewater management, combining nature-based treatment systems with innovative agricultural technologies, contributing to effluents valorization, demonstrating environmental and economic benefits, and represents a key milestone in his academic career. In addition to research, he actively contributes to the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of experimental systems at the Integrated Multitrophic Systems Laboratory (LSRE-LCM/IPL), ensuring experimental reliability and efficiency. He has complemented his academic training with specialized courses, including Sustainability in Engineering – Research Practices, as well as technical expertise in quantification of heavy metals by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) and organic compounds by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). He frequently participates in workshops, conferences, and scientific training sessions, broadening his interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. Tomás has co-authored three peer-reviewed publications in international journals indexed in Scopus, addressing hydroponics (DOI: 10.3390/pr11020365), wastewater valorization (DOI: 10.3390/w16111524), and sustainable agricultural systems (DOI: 10.3390/app152312695). He also has a book chapter accepted for publication in the Springer Water series (ICoWEFS 2025 Water Proceedings), a review article on contaminants of emerging concern currently under evaluation in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Advances, and a submitted article on soilless garden strawberries cultivation in the Journal of Sustainable Agriculture and Environment (evidence as attachments). He has actively disseminated his research at multiple international scientific events, including a poster in the 6th Doctoral Congress in Engineering, an oral communication on the 6th International Conference on Water, Energy, Food and Sustainability, a poster in the Winter School on Contaminants of Emerging Concern, a poster and oral communication in the V and VI editions of the International Congress on Education, Environment and Development, and a poster in the Symposium on Production and Transformation of Food in a Sustainable Environment. Overall, his profile combines strong academic training, extensive research experience, and active scientific dissemination. He has developed skills in laboratory analytics, environmental engineering processes, and sustainable resource management, positioning him to contribute to innovative solutions in water treatment, effluent valorization, and circular economy strategies.
