Luísa Peixe, PharmD. MSc, PhD., Professor, Vice-Director of Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit (UCIBIO) since 2023 and leader and founder of BACT_DRUGS Lab from 2005. As a Full Professor in Microbiology at FFUP and an ESCMID fellow, her expertise lies in Bacteriology, Antimicrobials, and Antimicrobial Resistance. Dr. Peixe obtained her pharmaceutical degree from University of Lisboa, Lisboa, Portugal, and obtained a M.S. equivalent degree in Microbiology and a Ph.D. in Microbiology, University of Porto with a thesis in antimicrobial resistance area developed in Hosp. Ramón y Cajal, Madrid and Laboratory of Microbiology of FFUP. Dr. Peixe is a nationally and internationally recognized expert conducting basic, translational and clinical research on mechanisms, evolution and transmission of antibiotic resistance, within a One Health approach. Her expertise also includes the clinical impact of resistance and molecular epidemiology of antibiotic-resistant organisms, using FT-IR spectroscopy and state-of-the-art genomic analyses. More recently, she is also interested in the role of urobiome in health and disease, as well as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance, allowing to enlarge the expertise of her group in methodologies to capture bacterial diversity (e.g. culturomic and amplicon sequencing) and in bacterial taxonomy. Dr. Peixe is an expert of Biohazard Panel of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and of the Qualitative Presumption of Safety working group of EFSA, member of scientific advisory board of Joint Program Initiative for Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR) and has served as reviewer for different funding agencies (e.g. FP7-European Commission; Horizon 2020; Swiss National Science Foundation). She participated in the EMA (European Medicines Agency) working groups for the criteria to designate antimicrobials or groups of antimicrobials reserved for treatment of certain infections in human and for the list of antibiotics restricted to human use. She has been active in professional societies including the ESCMID, where she acted as Director of the ESCMID Summer School in 2009, Chair of 'Food and Water Borne Diseases Study Group' or in the Program Planning Committee of ECCMID. She participated also in the Program planning committee of ASM Microbe (2017), IMMEM (2019) and in Microbiotec. Her involvement also extended to the development of the FEMS 'Common European Curriculum for degrees in health sciences'. She has been involved in editorial board of scientific journals (e.g. Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Scientific Reports, Microbial Drug Resistance) and is a frequent reviewer for most relevant journals in antimicrobial resistance field. She is also the coordinator of citizen science projects MicroMundo@UP and SAFE-Porto, improving antimicrobial resistance awareness. Dr. Peixe research has greatly contributed to elucidate the role of different settings to the AMR burden, to the characterization of new antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and relevant mobile genetic platforms carrying resistance determinants. Their group also contributed to improve the diagnosis and control of resistant bacteria, through the development of Blue-Carba test, allowing the rapid detection of carbapenemase (recommended by WHO), and typing by FT-IR spectroscopy. Her group described already several new bacterial species, demonstrating a larger bacterial urobiome diversity than previously described. Dr. Peixe holds a national and international patent and honored 32 awards, including the recent 'Prémios Maratona da Saúde-2022'. She is author of over 270 original research articles published in high-ranking international journals and a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings. She supervised 16 post-doctoral (junior and auxiliar) researchers, 35 PhD, 12 Masters and a vast number of undergraduated, and successfully coordinated 12 research projects resulted from competitive funding.
