I always had a thirst for knowledge about how our brains work. Therefore, I decided to graduate in Health Sciences at Universidade de Lisboa with the purpose of accomplishing an overview about the important topics to connect all the concepts in this subject. Later, I enrolled in a Master’s Degree, in Neurosciences at Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. This fact enriched my curricular experience and personal achievements and gave me the opportunity to work on my master thesis at Instituto de Farmacologia e Neurociências (Instituto de Medicina Molecular). Thus, I have had excellent opportunities to be exposed to research and laboratory-based environments and, consequently, I have become even more fascinated about the world of neurosciences. Furthermore, I had the chance to expand a network with experts in the field and the opportunity to collaborate effectively in their work in order to publish our results in international journals. All these experiences have built my confidence to work more independently as a researcher. My master thesis was centred on synaptic dysfunction and neurotrophic factors in Alzheimer’s disease and now my interests for my PhD thesis are still focused on the same topic but in the context of schizophrenia, a psyquiatric disorder. The fact that different disorders could have common features had always captivated my attention. Therefore, it is my aspiration to clarify and decipher this mechanisms in psychiatric disorders where it is urgent to disclose novel therapeutic approaches in order to fill the gaps in their treatment. I use molecular and functional ex vivo and in vivo approaches, in a tight collaboration with a group at the University in Lancaster who have high expertise in animal models of schizophrenia. The collaboration is further reinforced by the fact that Lisbon and Lancaster groups belong to a twinning action financed by the H2020 EU framework. Taking in account my experience in the techniques I am proposed to perform as well as my enthusiasm and interest in this project, it is my determination to be an active and helpful member in this team.
