Marco Lucas is a researcher at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal, and a member of the Vila Real Chemistry Centre (CQVR). His research focuses on the development of advanced technologies for water and wastewater treatment, particularly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), photocatalysis and hybrid treatment systems for complex industrial and agro-industrial effluents. He obtained a PhD in Chemistry from UTAD in 2009, following degrees in Environmental Technology and Environmental Engineering and Natural Resources. His doctoral work focused on the application of advanced oxidation processes for industrial wastewater treatment and included research stays at the University of Nottingham (UK) and the Plataforma Solar de Almería (Spain), providing early international experience in environmental technologies and collaborative research. Following his PhD, he conducted postdoctoral research at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), where he worked on the removal of toxic metals from mining and industrial effluents using low-cost sorbent materials. Between 2011 and 2013 he served as an Auxiliary Researcher at the Chemistry Centre of Vila Real under the Portuguese Ciência programme, where he consolidated his research line in advanced oxidation processes and environmental technologies for wastewater treatment. He subsequently joined Loughborough University (UK) as a Research Associate in a project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), contributing to the development of innovative gas–liquid reactor technologies for water decontamination. In 2015 he was awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship hosted at Loughborough University, which enabled him to further develop expertise in reactor engineering and process intensification strategies for advanced water treatment systems. In 2017 he returned to Portugal as a Principal Researcher under the FCT Investigator programme hosted at UTAD. Since 2021 he has held the position of Auxiliary Researcher at UTAD, where he develops interdisciplinary research at the interface of chemistry, environmental engineering and water sustainability, with particular focus on innovative treatment technologies for wastewater reuse, removal of micropollutants and pathogens, and sustainable management of agro-industrial effluents. His research has contributed to advancing methodological and technological frameworks combining chemical oxidation processes, catalytic materials and reactor engineering to design efficient and adaptable treatment systems. In particular, his work has explored hybrid treatment strategies integrating advanced oxidation processes with biological treatment, coagulation–flocculation and adsorption processes, enabling improved biodegradability and enhanced removal of recalcitrant organic pollutants in complex wastewaters. Another important dimension of his work concerns photochemical technologies driven by solar radiation and UV-LED systems. These studies have contributed to the development of experimental methodologies and reactor concepts for energy-efficient oxidation processes and scalable water treatment technologies. In addition to technological innovation in water treatment, his work integrates circular economy perspectives in agro-industrial wastewater management, including the valorisation of agricultural residues and the development of resource-efficient treatment strategies. Alongside his research activities, he has also contributed to academic governance, serving as Vice-Head of the Chemistry Department (2021–2025) and currently as a member of the Scientific Council of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at UTAD.
