An accomplished lexicographer, Ana Salgado is a project leader at the Instituto de Lexicologia e Lexicografia da Língua Portuguesa of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (ACL). Ana is currently coordinating the compilation of a new digital Portuguese-language dictionary and launched the first digital spelling vocabulary of the ACL. In addition to this, she represents the ACL in the H2020-funded project ELEXIS. Among other roles in the ACL, she is also editor of the Thesaurus de Ciências da Terra in collaboration with Lemos de Sousa and Telles Antunes; develops a database of Earth Science thesauri and glossaries; teaches the lexicography course «How to make a dictionary»; helps to organize events. Ana’s lexicographic career started at the distinguished Portuguese publishing house Porto Editora (PE). She was employed there for almost fifteen years, being responsible for a number of important projects on the topics of lexicographic references. She successfully coordinated, managed and brought many lexicographic projects to completion. These included the coordination of the 2nd edition of Grande Dicionário Houaiss da Língua (Portuguese version, Círculo de Leitores); the coordination and editing of entries for Dicionário Editora da Língua Portuguesa (PE), Grande Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa (PE); the coordination of Dicionário Editora de Espanhol–Português, by A.I. Sanromán (PE). As scientific coordinator of the PE Dictionary Department her roles and accomplishments included: redesigning the Infopédia web interface; supervising the department’s morphological analyser and maintaining its linguistic data input; helping to develop the spelling converter and spell checker; enhancing the functionality of dictionary editing software; training others in new spelling rules and linguistic terminology; applying the new Portuguese spelling standards; managing the Palavra do Ano® initiative; created content for RTP’s Bom Português program. Having gained solid know-how in making dictionaries from her intensive daily lexicographic work and with a strong background in Portuguese studies, Ana was motivated to further her knowledge of lexicography, terminology and digital humanities. This was because she wanted the insight necessary to contribute to the modernization of the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the Portuguese lexicographic tradition. Therefore, Ana enrolled in a PhD program at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Her PhD project, under the supervision of Prof. Rute Costa and Dr. Toma Tasovac, focuses on the treatment of terms in general language dictionaries and seeks to bridge a gap between lexicography and terminology. It aims to incorporate both lexicographic and terminological methodologies to redesign the macrostructure/microstructure of monolingual dictionaries in a way that will improve the quality and interoperability of lexical resources. With Alberto Simões, Ana is developing LeXmart, an open-source web platform for lexicographers. In order to learn more about the proper application of the latest best practices, she has participated in training activities, including workshops as well as several summer schools having won several scholarships (ELEXIS, Dariah, ESSLI) to attend these. Her research interests include lexicography, terminology, data modelling carried out according to the TEI encoding chapter for dictionaries, the creation, management and use of digital lexical resources. In her professional activities, she interacts with several national and international collaborators and has co-authored scientific papers. Founder and CEO of Pórtico da Língua Portuguesa, she is also a consultant in a number of commissions. Ana is a team player and is very detail-oriented. On top of this, she has excellent Portuguese written, verbal and media communication skills.
