Miguel C Seabra, MD, PhD, is a leading researcher in the field of cellular and molecular medicine. MS holds a PhD from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (1992), where he was an Assistant Professor, before moving to the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London where he became Full Professor and head of Section until 2007. MS is now Full Professor at the Medical School of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, where he coordinates research in Cellular and Molecular Medicine and holds several chairs. More recently, he became Head of Global Eye Initiative at Fundação Champalimaud. MS was president of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) from 2012 to 2015, the portuguese public funding agency for science and research in Portugal. He is Principal Investigador and Group Leader of the Molecular Mechanisms of Disease group at NMS-UNL, with 3 post-doctoral researchers, 2 PhD students in training and 1 Lab technician. In 2021 also became the Head of Global Eye Initiative, Fundação Champalimaud, where his research group is starting activities in 2022. Published 172 articles in journals, with more than 18000 citations (h-Index=70). In the world ranking of scientists in all areas by Ioannidis et al, he ranks 0.22% top globally and one of the portuguese top 10. Has 4 sections of books and 1 book. Has 1 patent registered and funded 2 biotechnology companies. Since 1996, supervised 22 PhD thesis and an average of 3 BSc and Masters students/year. Has received 10 awards and/or honors. Participates and/or participated as Principal investigator in dozens of projects, raising about ~10 million as Principal Investigator. Moreover, MS has provided remarkable contributions to the elucidation of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying Choroideremia and has been the leader of a pioneering clinical trial of Choroideremia gene therapy.
