Márcia Dias Sousa holds a PhD in Translation Studies (Universidade Católica Portuguesa), a Master's degree in Translation and Linguistic Consultancy (Universidade dos Açores), and a first degree in Communication and Media Studies (ISCSP-Universidade de Lisboa). For her PhD thesis, she developed an interdisciplinary study combining Translation, Media and Religious Studies, and specialized in the use of translation in journalistic practices. Because it still presents room to explore, and given its complexity in terms of agents, practices, languages and (in)direction of the textual and cultural exchanges established within the polysystem, she proposed a new research methodology - the circuit of translation in the journalistic field -, hoping to shed light about such a particular domain within Translation (and Media) Studies. As a researcher, she is particularly drawn into critical discourse analysis, namely of texts published in the press since the early 20th Century until today. Her main goal is to understand how journalists reinterpret a given reality according to the ideologies (in Althusser's terms) implemented in the newsrooms and the surrounding social, cultural and historical panorama as well. Her main research interests are: translation and/in the news, history of translation, translation and culture, translation and religion, religious non-sacred texts, the Holy See and the Catholic Pope as political agents, the e-volution of the Holy See on its approach to the faithful, global history, global leaders and international organizations, international politics, the media as social agents, Portugal during Estado Novo and press censorship, food studies and the connection between food, culture and the sense of community.
