Sónia Cruz is Assistant Researcher at The University of Aveiro and the coordinator of the Marine Biotechnology and Aquaculture research group at CESAM (Centre for Marine and Environmental Studies). She specialized in algae eco-physiology during her PhD at the University of Sheffield (UK), in close collaboration with the University of Leipzig (Germany). In 2010, she started a postdoctoral research position at the University of Cambridge (UK), developing microbial biophotovoltaic cells exploiting the ability of cyanobacteria and microalgae to convert light energy into electrical current. Since 2011, Sónia Cruz dedicated to research on a unique algae-animal association: kleptoplasty in sea slugs. Currently, she mainly develops research on (i) algae eco-physiology, including applied photobiology in algae biomass production, frequently in collaboration with SMEs companies, and on (ii) functional kleptoplasts (“stolen” algal chloroplasts) inside animal cells.
