Bruno Miranda obtained is Medical degree (2006) at the University of Lisbon and his PhD degree (2016) in Neuroscience at the University College of London (and as part of the International Neurocience Doctoral Programme at the Champalimaud Foundation). His graduation work was on the computational models and neural signatures for different reinforcement learning strategies which can be used to guide decision-making, under the supervision of Doctor Steven Kennerley and Professor Peter Dayan (2017 Brain Prize). From a clinical perspective he obtained his title of Specialist in Neurology (2019) and has undertaken in-depth training in epidemiological and patient-oriented research skills. His clinical research has been centred on cognition and neurophysiology in both neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases. At present, he is a Junior Researcher and Assistant Professor at the Lisbon School of Medicine of the University of Lisbon; and a Clinical Researcher at the Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes. His current research work is focused on how the basic principles of human goal-directed behaviour and decision-making models can provide mechanistic explanations for human-environmental interactions and neuropsychiatric manifestations (characterized by failures to learn or act based on models of the environment). Moreover, his interests include transdisciplinary collaborations and applications of such neurobiological principles to other fields such as urban planning (or neurourbanism) and architecture (neuroarchitecture). The experimental methods used to address these research questions include detailed behavioural analysis (e.g., biomonitoring and digital health), computational modelling, as well as neurophysiology and neuroimaging techniques. Finally, Dr. Miranda promotes good communication among team members and engages on the required efforts to fulfil the planned research targets.

Disciplina Curso (Tipo) Instituição / Organização
2019/04 - Atual This discipline aims to provide the acquisition of essential knowledge about the function of the nervous system in an integrated perspective and in relation to Engineering. It includes a theoretical and practical activities on Neurophysiology (local field potentials / single-cell recordings). The theoretical part includes an introduction to the different levels of brain electrophysiological recording. The practical session consists on computing exercises about the analysis of real recordings of neuronal cells. 2019/03 - Atual The main objective of this discipline is to introduce students to cellular function in relation to the behaviour of excitable cells that include the nervous and muscular systems, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal and normal renal functions. The emphasis of teaching is through approaches with experimental evidence underlying current knowledge, and students are encouraged to develop their understanding of physiological processes as part of an active and distance learning strategy. 2017/11/09 - Atual The academic session is intended to provide the student with knowledge about the proper function of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and the autonomic nervous system in a homeostatic size, allowing it to later understand its dysfunction. On the other hand, emphasis is placed on understanding how the nervous system interacts with other organs and systems, as well as, in a reciprocal way, how the disturbance in the function of other organs and systems can affect the nervous system.
