Sílvia Martins Afonso (PhD) is a researcher at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD, Portugal) and an integrated member of the Centre for Research and Technologies in Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences (CITAB) and the Inov4Agro Associated Laboratory. She holds a PhD in Agrarian and Forestry Sciences from UTAD, awarded with the Best PhD Thesis in Agrarian and Forestry Sciences (2023–2024) under the Crédito Agrícola Award, as well as a Master’s degree in Food Quality and Safety and a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnological Engineering from the Instituto Politécnico de Bragança. She is currently involved in the PRR Vine&Wine – Zero & Low Alcohol Wines Project. Her research activity focuses on agrarian and food biotechnology, plant physiology, sustainable horticulture, postharvest technology, valorisation of agri-food by-products, and innovative approaches to wine dealcoholization, with a strong emphasis on sustainability-driven and applied research for the agrifood and wine sectors. She has published 27 peer-reviewed scientific articles, holds an h-index of 13, and has received several scientific awards, including distinctions for best PhD thesis, oral communications, and poster presentations. She has also authored book chapters and technical-scientific publications and has presented her work in more than 20 oral communications and 30 poster presentations at national and international scientific conferences. Throughout her career, she has participated in national and PRR-funded research projects, supervised and co-supervised undergraduate and master’s students, and contributed actively to advanced academic training, science dissemination, and outreach activities, consolidating a scientific profile strongly committed to sustainable agricultural and agrifood innovation, particularly in fruit production systems and wine biotechnology.
