João Carlos Paquete Ferreira

João C. Paquete-Ferreira graduated in 2017 with a BSc. in Biochemistry and, more recently, finished an MSc. in Biochemistry (2019), both granted by Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-NOVA). The main scientific interests of Paquete-Ferreira are the production of protein for determination of their structures, using X-ray Crystallography, for the rational development of new drugs, and the biophysical characterization of protein-ligand interactions. At the end of his BSc, he enrolled in the Macromolecular Crystallography Lab UCIBIO @REQUIMTE (FCT-NOVA), where he developed his first research activities, contacting with different techniques, giving him the knowledge to overexpress, purify and crystalize a protein, as well, as characterize it with diverse biophysical techniques. Paquete-Ferreira developed his master’s thesis, also in the Macromolecular Crystallography Lab, being able to solve the first reported three-dimensional structure of an LCP protein from Streptococcus dysgalactiae subs. dysgalactiae and extensively studied the interaction of the protein with different ligands. Also, during his master’s thesis, Paquete-Ferreira was involved in another project regarding the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein, that is overexpressed in tumours leading to resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. From is participation in this project resulted in his first scientific publication. Among the experimental activities, communication in science was an important part as well, resulting in two oral communications with one of them being held at VIII Encontro Nacional de Utilzadores de Radiação de Sincrotrão (ENURS). These experiences improve his ability to communicate and perform a presentation that is pleasant to assist for a scientific audience. Paquete-Ferreira activities go beyond the scientific environment, as he is an active member of the community. He was involved in different organizations within the bachelor’s degree of Biochemistry that aims to improve the academic experience of the students. Taken together, Paquete-Ferreira experiences and skills make him a valuable asset to be part of a research team.
